What is Bookends?

Bookends is a reference management app that allows users to search and download references from various sources, including Amazon, Google Scholar, and PubMed. Users can organize their references into groups, annotate PDFs, and sync their libraries across iOS devices and with Bookends on Mac. The app offers both a Standard Version and a Pro Features Yearly Subscription, which includes cloud sync, multi-library support, and unlimited barcode scans.

Software Features and Description

1. Pro Features Yearly Subscription (cloud sync of references and attachments, multi-library support, unlimited barcode scans) is a separate in-app purchase ($9.99) and requires a susbcription that is renewable on a yearly basis.

2. You can search Amazon, arXiv, Google Books, Google Scholar, JSTOR, the Library of Congress, PubMed, PubMed Central, and Web of Science (requires access privileges and ip authentication) for references and download them, with pdfs (requires access privileges), to your personal library.

3. Bookends for iOS without a Standard Version in-app purchase is limited in the following ways: searches return a maximum of 20 references, only 50 references can be stored in your local database, PDFs that you annotate on the iOS device are watermarked, and ads are shown.

4. Organize your references by groups (static and smart), annotate your pdfs directly within Bookends, and email references from your device to yourself or others in a form suitable for reading or importing into reference management applications.

5. Use iCloud to sync all your libraries and attachments across iOS devices and with Bookends running on the Mac, and have full access to your references and sources whether you're at your desk or on the go.

6. To have full access without these restrictions you must make a purchase from within the app ("in-app purchase”).

7. The subscription might renew if it wasn't canceled more than 24 hours before the renewal date.

8. Bookends is a reference management app for your iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

9. The subscription can be managed in iOS -> Settings > iTunes & App Store > Subscriptions.

10. No cancellation of the current subscription is allowed during the active subscription period.

11. Autofill references from the internet by DOI or ISBN.

iCloud Sync does not handle attachments

Looked promising but is lacking in proper sync functionality. I set up the first library of 3 citations and saved to iCloud (purchased all upgrades) using an iPad. Down-synced on iPhone. There are seemingly no attachments. Re-downloaded one from the web and now there are suddenly two attachments. The others have again no attachments. Already read all available documentation and web posts without success and double-checked program, sync and iCloud settings. Seems to be a bug, but one that wasted my $20 expenditure. I retracted my one star rating but needs a try-before-you-buy for its advanced features for any unreserved recommendation and before the prospective user would spend money without any refund option. Also, the interface does not reflect the purchase and subscription status as the purchase/upgrade options appear unchanged irrespective of purchase status. I appreciate the developer response and had already tried those options and read all documentation. Repeating the steps did not work unfortunately.
So far quite promising!

After a bit of difficulty getting the sync set up, I was able to get this set up, and so far it's worked remarkably well. Be aware that there are sample libraries when you bout to the program, so you may inadvertently add some of those references to your program. I've tried several similar programs and always lost annotations in the sync process (papers 3, mendeley) or had other problems (sente). It's been about a month since I started using this, and so far the sync had been seamless. The program itself is quick and intuitive once set up. I also very much appreciate the responsiveness of the developers to questions and problems. I would highly recommend this program. Definitely worth the small annual free to have the piece of mind.
Indispensable Research Tool

As a independent business consultant and genealogist, my days are spent researching and writing. After using Sente, Papers 3 and Mendeley, this app is a clear winner. Synchronization across my iMac and iPad efficiently operates in the background using iCloud. The ability to highlight, take inline notes and summary notes all from within the app is invaluable as I hate having to switch between various tools. this app (macOS) allows for scripting which enabled exporting notes into Scrivener (my writing platform) via OPML. Once writing, insertion of citekeys is straightforward. this app is an indispensable cornerstone application within my workflow.

It looks like a really useful program. I converted my Sente database on Mac to this app on Mac, then synced it to the iPad version. Once I had the programs set up and running, all the data moved over with no problems. The iPad version is basic - I wish it had the ability to open a web page and extract a reference from a site like Nature or Science, but it gets the job done!
