- It supports most file compression types, including RAR.

- The paid version uses all cores, including hyper threading, for faster compressing and decompressing.

- It successfully compressed an 8GB Virtual Machine directory using Zip.

Cons:

- iPack fails to make a 7Zip archive above about 8GB.

- Dragging and dropping folders to the desktop doesn't work as expected, making it difficult to organize files.

- It simply stops compressing with no error or warning when using 7-Zip.

- It took several hours to compress an 8GB test on a MacBook Pro with a 2.8Ghz Core i7 on an SSD drive.

  • Great Lightweight Tool, but Fails with Heavy Weight Work

    By dBeatsdesmo (Pcmac user)

I’ve been using this app for some time now. For the most part, I think it’s really good. I mainly use it as a 7z frontend, as the developer of 7z (Igor) has no desire to make his cmdline interface even remotely intuitive, and instead feels perfectly fine insulting people from his ivory tower. If it weren’t for the next comment, I would be giving this app 5 stars however, Any attempt to make a 7Zip archive above about 8GB will simply fail. There were times it would work, but lately, it seems it just can’t handle it anymore. I’m force to go back to the horrid existance that is Igor’s cmdline to make archives when this happens. Interestingly, this app WILL read these and extract them, but making larger .7z files is the achilles heel of this app right now. I hope it will improve. There’s seems no way to contact the developer, although he/she does update this from time to time and that’s a good sign as many other apps just stay stale. So if the developer of this app is listening, please fix the large 7z creation problems and send Igor back into his dungeon of cmdline doom for me.
  • Doesn't work well with 7-Zip

    By MicroDev (Pcmac user)

Simply stops compressing with no error or warning when using 7-Zip. Worked successfully with Zip when compressing an 8GB Virtual Machine directory. Took several hours to compress the 8GB test on a MacBook Pro with a 2.8Ghz Core i7 on an SSD drive. When using Zip, it was able to compress down to 4.6GB. Using BetterZip, the compression was much better (and faster) using 7-Zip. The 7-Zip compression yeilded a file of only 3.27GB in size (29% smaller). The interface is pretty simplistic with crowded preferences which would be better served by separating options into separate tabs. For the money, for password protected Zips, I think it's probably worth the cost. However BetterZip performs better and has a more complete interface but BetterZips price makes it a very poor value.
  • A very useful tool

    By iammeat (Pcmac user)

I use this all the time. My only complaint is regarding dragging and dropping of folders to the desktop. It never drops them where I put them, but instead puts them on the right below the last icon/item that was placed there, or in between other items if there was a space available. As I commonly use two or three screens, it means I need to hide all my windows first before I can open the folder, rather than being able to open it from where I dropped it. Other than that, I'm very happy with this app overall.
  • Awesome Almost All Compression/Decompression App

    By Lotw (Pcmac user)

I have tried a few of the compression/decompression apps and so far this is the best one. Works with most file compression types. RAR support is there if you get RAR yourself and works awesome. I would suggest that is all you do is just decompress ZIP, 7-ZIP, etc files to get his free version. If however you are like me and want the fastest compressing and decompressing get this paid version. It actually uses all cores, including hyper threading. So if you have a Core i7 Quad core this app can use all 8 cores (4 real and 4 hyper) to compress/decompress.
