Forced to create an account (NO LONGER - SEE UPDATE #2)

UPDATE #2: I’m very pleased to say that the developer has listened to the user base and removed the mandatory account creation. It gives me hope when companies buck the trend to collect more data (or open the door for this data collection), and I’m more than happy to give the program a five-star rating now that they have removed this requirement. UPDATE #1: They now mention the registration requirement in the “what’s new” release notes, but the reasons they give aren’t great in my opinion. Please, just make the registration optional - I’m not going to make an account for an app I purchased years ago and so the money I originally paid for is otherwise a waste. If you need more income, make a paid upgrade version - it’s so much better than giving up more data in this day and age. I considered the old version a five-star program for what it was, but the new update appears to force the creation of an account to continue to use the software. These types of tactics really bother me when they're for software I’ve already paid for, so I’m giving it one star until they remove that requirement. The account creation is not even mentioned in the "what’s new" notes. Good grief.

I don’t really understand the outrage about creating an account. It takes five seconds. Everyone creates trial accounts all the time just to try apps. One issue could be that having an account doesn’t really do anything. I think it makes sense to have a Guest option for people who doesn’t want to create an account. I understand taking a star off for this, but by giving these horrible ratings, people are just hurting this app, which is otherwise still great after several years. It is a simple distraction free writing environment with minimal features. I hope the iPad version gets an update, too, because I think the iOS is a better platform for such a minimal app. I tend to use more feature rich apps on my Mac.

UPDATE: The developer fixed the problem I outlined below - but I’ve since moved on to other apps, so they’ve lost me forever as a customer when they made this really poor decision described below. Review adjusted. PREVIOUS REVIEW: This app is no longer unusable. It’s a paid app that cannot be used in ANY WAY without registering an account. An absolute vioaltion of the Apple App Store rules and of user trust. This isn’t Netflix or a subscription service of any kind. Apps that gate users that aren't a subscription service in the past would get blocked by Apple during App Store review process because it was considered a violation of Apple’s intended user experience rules. EG: Pay for an app, nothing should block users from using it right away. The only exception to this rule was subscription services or cloud account services. OMMWrite is neither of those (and shouldn’t be.) I’m guessing the developer got around that rule because it was an update vs a new app - so Apple slid it the update through without much scrutiny. Regardless - I’m uninstalling and never using this again. Pretty disgusting to take such a great app and destroy it overnight with such a stupid decision.

I highly recommend this app, and would suggest not to listen to the one star ratings posted here, because most of them are from a previous update that is now irrelevent. The app no longer requires you make an account, which seems to be the main complaint among users. This app is really great. I love the different themes, music, fonts, etc. that you can choose from. It also works way better than the free online version, so I think the seven bucks is worth it. It’s easy to use, and accomplishes exactly what I wanted from it: a calm, simple platform that helps me focus on writing without distractions. A very pleasant and peaceful place to write.
