What is TurnCount?

TurnCount is a traffic counting app that allows users to count the number of vehicles and pedestrians entering an intersection. It offers two interfaces, the Hyper Interface and the Classic Interface, to count traffic. The app provides visual and audible feedback for each action, and users can classify trucks, bicycles, and pedestrians with different gestures. TurnCount also offers various data output formats, including JCD, PDF, UTDF, CSV, and HTML, for further analysis.

Software Features and Description

1. Lastly, a .HTML file is created showing count data in tabular format by vehicle type and pedestrians.

2. A Universal Traffic Data Format (UTDF) file is available for importing vehicle counts into Synchro signal timing software.

3. One interface, the Hyper Interface, brings an approach to counting traffic that will revolutionize the industry! Vehicles are counted by moving a thumb (or any other finger) in the direction of the vehicle movement.

4. A PDF file is created showing a count summary, the peak hour, corresponding peak hour factors, and the peak hour counts shown on an intersection graphic.

5. The time stamp for each vehicle and pedestrian movement is also available in a comma separated value (.CSV) format file for additional analysis in spreadsheet programs.

6. But, the similarities end there! Classify trucks now with a quick double tap of the on-screen button, count bicycles with a long press of an on-screen button, and count pedestrians by swiping a finger across the street being crossed.

7. The second interface, the Classic Interface, requires the user to tap a virtual on-screen button for each vehicle movement.

8. Traffic count data is provided in five file formats.

9. Either gesture works! A quick double tap prior to the finger gesture classifies a truck, a slow swipe counts a bicycle, and pedestrians are counted with a swipe of a finger across the street.

Download an Android emulator for PC:

Open the Emulator app you installed » goto its search bar and search "TurnCount"

- Not as feature-rich as more expensive count boards like Jamar Ultra-Video

I purchased this app 6 or 7 years ago when the company I worked for was shopping for handheld TMC counters. I decided to give this a try because it made sense to have a self contained device that did more than just keep tally of buttons pressed and then still required post-processing of the data. Needless to say, in these 6-7 years my iOS and phone have been updated several times and I’ve seldom had an issue. Developer has responded and addressed issues constantly. I am very happy with it. If I had to make any suggestions for improvement the would be: • Options for the graphic in the report to be black & white or simplified. I like the colors and design but I’m weary of using it on professional documents. • Option to rotate the north orientation of the intersection. If the side street is E-W, it is displayed in the width of the screen which is visually confusing if you are using a phone with a 9:16 aspect ratio screen. • Not sure if it’s possible to disable other apps’ notifications while the app is running. When a notification comes up while counting It will get pressed and you will exit the app to view that notification, which is irritating. I guess you could put your phone in airplane mode if you don’t want to get interrupted while counting. I wholly recommend this app for turning movement counts. Great job!

I am a practicing / retired traffic engineer with more than 40 years of experience. Why pay $400 to $1,000 for a count board when this is available. Carry your count board with you on your iPhone or iPad. This is a great app for me. I think it would work great for municipalities and consultants. I like it and recommend it.
App No Longer Crashing

Needs MANY FEATURES ADDED. The ability to ad u-turns, customize the interface, the ability to do more than SIMPLE turning movement counts, shift buttons (since they have jamar output, they should offer jamars features. The ability to do video studies and end the intervals at will. I will continue to use my Jamar ultra-video, primarily because of the features. Great novelty for beginners and someone who only wants turning movement counts. I own 2 traffic eng. service firms, primarily doing traffic studies. We conduct about 20,000 studies a year. I hope they upgrade this system so it could be a primary tool instead of a novelty product.
