Top Pcmac Reviews

  • I use this app every day - highly recommended.

    By Reverentspy (Pcmac user)

this app is very, very good at what it does. Some have pointed out that it’s not a full featured LaTeX tool; true, but there are many tasks that call for a short note, letter, email or even a brief article and these can be done quickly and efficiently with this app. A math form reference, a math symbol finder, and command completion are all built-in and are as good or better than anything I’ve tried. I appreciate that I don’t have to leave the OSX infrastructure to write. I have recommended this to colleagues and students, even those who are not experienced with TeX, and they are always amazed that, for a very modest price, they can load one app and be productive right from the start. Another big positive for me is that this app’ rendered PDF is quite good: clean, modern and readable. I highly recommend this app, and I hope Matt Rajca continues development of this excellent product.
  • Concerns about new non-standard file format

By Quark Gluon Plasma (Pcmac user)

The latest version saves files in a “new, more capable” and “future-proof, package-based” file format. This is exactly what I don’t want. Latex and markdown in ascii files ARE future proof. I specifically want files that can be edited on, say, an iPad and is accessible on some other device belonging to collaborators who don’t use macs. The release notes do say that ascii files may still be used, but new features may not be available. This is exactly the sort of fragmentation Latex and markdown try to avoid, and I think it is unwise for a small developer to introduce a new file format to wrap around them, however well-meant. My previous review was 5-star, but no to this version.
  • Great for learning LaTeX math, but needs more export options

    By rcolinray (Pcmac user)

I’ve dabbled in LaTeX before using this app, but this app has rekindled my interest in using LaTeX. Markdown is powerful enough for the majority of my formatting needs. However, my notes often include equations which do not translate well to Markdown. The support for LaTeX math finally enables me to express complex mathematical equations embedded in simple markdown formatting. In doing what it claims to do, this app gets top marks. However, my usual note-taking workflow is to write all my notes in Sublime Text 2 or Editorial on the iPad and then export them to Evernote. this app’ export options are comparatively slim, and in my opinion that keeps it from being the perfect app.
  • Great for drafting notes, blog posts, and online replies.

    By PeytonRand (Pcmac user)

Under the hood, this app uses MathJAX, a JavaScript math typesetting engine that implements a subset of LaTeX for displaying math. MathJAX is widely used online, so what you write in this app displays on your blog, Piazza, MathOverflow, etc. this app features like live preview, inline error messages, symbol drawing, and tight OS X integration make drafting such snippets much less frustrating than using a plain text field. Unfortunately, MathJAX doesn’t support document layout features of LaTeX. this app as of 1.3.2 is thus currently unsuitable for typesetting documents with TeX. It would be nice in a future release to see some integration with traditional TeX distributions like MacTeX.
