★ ★ ★ Deflection Overview

What is Deflection? Deflection is a highly interactive and precise app designed for structural beam analysis. It allows users to design visually and obtain engineering results, graphs, and equations instantaneously. The app is suitable for mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and structural engineering students and professionals.

Software Features and Description

1. This tool will help you apply beam elastic theory from day 1 as you are learning Mechanics of Materials, and it will be your go-to pocket reference any time in the future.

2. This software is the result of over six years of continuous development and innovation aimed at mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and structural engineering.

3. Find a cross section in the built-in library, or define a custom shape.

4. Specify values directly, or find common shapes and materials using the built-in databases.

5. Deflection is the most interactive, fast, and precise app available for structural beam analysis.

6. Deflection, internal stresses, and other useful results are automatically updated.

7. Simply place loads and supports on the beam, and see how it bends.

8. Edit built-in cross sections.

9. Shape properties are automatically calculated.

- Cross-section databases for common shapes and materials in different countries including the United States, Europe, Japan, India, Russia, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and China.

- Cross-section editor to edit built-in cross sections with automatically calculated shape properties such as moment of inertia and area.

- Unlimited loads and supports including concentrated point loads, distributed loads, moment loads, simple supports, fixed supports, fixed hinges, and floating Gerber hinges.

- Optional application of beam self-weight.

- Automatic detection of local maxima and minima in diagrams.

- Unlimited design files and quick-start templates.

- Metric and standard measurement units.

Pros:

- Provides a good sanity check for solid model evaluation

- Offers angle measurement for experiments

Cons:

- Interface is klunky and calculator layout is poor

- Lacks the ability to enter scientific notation in the calculator

- Missing aluminum extrusions

Top Pcmac Reviews

  • Needs polishing

    By 8Way (Pcmac user)

Kinda klunky interface. The calculator layout is poor. Calculator needs means of entering scientific notation. Missing aluminum extrusions. Should have a way to favorite beam shapes and add user defined ones. I prefer scientific notation normalized to be x.xx x10^x not xxx.x x10^x Not sure why 10x length limitation.
  • Great Application for quick accurate beam evaluations

    By faader4100 (Pcmac user)

Great sanity check software before delving into a solid model evaluation
  • it can be better

    By benyamin 5s (Pcmac user)

it should have angle for better experiment
  • Good try, but half finished app!

    By @DPKG (Pcmac user)

OK not meaning to put the dev down as this is a nice approach but I think the dev should have spent more time making the app workable than playing with the interface. The app is so called "version 5.0". One would assume from this it would have passed through four major iterations to get to this point. The app feels like beta release 0.9. The following are missing. 1. Save and file functions 2. Undo and redo 3. A "help" or tutorial. Also what would be nice would be the ability to design or draw beam sections instead of using the only ones offered. All that is provided is a database of standard sections downloaded off the internet, this would have been provided by version 3 or 4. The app feels like an engineer grad student trying to show off the engineering knowledge. Any of the five star reviews are either friends of the dev or purchasers of previous versions who are happy to see progress. If I have misrepresented the dev and invite them to contact me and I will revise my review.
