  • Very useful app

    By Rouxfus (Pcmac user)

I really like using this app. It is great for taking notes. There are a couple of things which would make it better. I often use it with a paired Bluetooth keyboard, and it does not support many of the standard controls for moving the insertion point, and making and extending selections using the command, option and control keys paired with arrows. Apple's apps like Notes and Mail do this well. It would also be helpful if it could do tab based indenting, with a tab key on the keyboard (assuming you could add a key to the keyboard). I like to indent in my note taking, like in an Outliner, but without all the other outlining stuff. Tab in and you get an indented paragraph where all the lines in the paragraph are indented to the same level. When you start a new paragraph by typing [Return] it starts the new paragraph at the same level of indent as the previous one. Tab again and it goes indented one more level deeper. To back it out, do shift tab. The key affects the entire paragraph no matter where the insertion point is when the tab key is typed. (Perhaps it shouldn't be a tab key but a dedicated [Indent] and [Outdent] button group, as Omni Outliner does it.) These are minor quibbles – it is a very useful app, especially because of the ability to IDE the notes as an index into the recording.
  • Killer iPad app and hero-maker for meetings and conference calls!

    By rdj999 (Pcmac user)

This is a killer iPad app. Indispensible for meetings, particularly conference calls. As a detailed note-taker, it frees me to write much less without losing complete and convenient access to information — which allows me to be a more engaged participant and seem less self-absorbed. Writing just a word or phrase builds a custom "index" into the recording while summarizing just the important parts. The app even silences keyboard clicks while recording! An unexpected benefit is the ability to send the recording to someone who missed the meeting. People really appreciate that! And how powerful is it to be able to get to the meat of "he said, she said" conflicts!? Hour-long recordings take surprisingly little memory space, however, the sound fidelity is overkill for most voice recordings. I can (with QuickTime Pro on a Mac) re-compress recordings into much smaller files that are more easily sent as email attachments. Perhaps a compression selection could be added as a recording preference.
  • Terrific! But no "undo" button.

    By Dr.Grace (Pcmac user)

In my latest brief tests, this app worked flawlessly for fast alternation between keyboard entry and sketching. The cursor automatically enters line-feeds to skip down to the bottom of the current sketch, so you can resume typing where you left off. There's no undo button, unfortunately. But when you tap once on a line in a drawing, you're given an option to delete it. In my short recording test run I found that tapping on a part of the text skipped to the corresponding part of the audio recording very well. Audio was uploaded well to Dropbox. I hope to try using this app for taking notes in meetings. Seems simple and practical. I'd like to see some refinements, like color for the text and drawing, a choice of line widths, and undo, of course. This app is not so great for handwriting, but I strongly recommend it for anyone who types notes and wants to add sketches also. This app has few bells and whistles, but for what it does, it's quite usable.
  • Like LiveScribe but better

    By honolulu dougo! (Pcmac user)

This makes the iPad function very much like a LiveScribe SmartPen but using a keyboard instead of a digital pen. The advantages of SoundPaper are that one can write much faster with a keyboard, and one can make corrections for spelling, grammar etc. I found this app by browsing at the LiveScribe site looking for an app that would integrate it with the iPad and allow me to use my Bluetooth keyboard instead of a pen. A link at the discussion forum brought me to this app and it has pretty much replaced my LiveScribe. I wish the two filetypes were compatible because I can see using both together, but if I had to choose one it would be SoundPaper. The ability to draw is extremely helpful when taking notes of certain kinds of presentations, and the learning curve is quick. It doesn't take much practice to be able to use this app and you can adapt it to your style or subjects. Really great!
