- Can be played offline

- Analog movement makes navigating thin platforms easier

Cons:

- New touch controls are not as good as the original Doom port's mappable control scheme

  • Not digging the new controls.

I’m glad the app 2 finally has an iPhone port, but I wish they’d kept the mappable control scheme of the original the app port from a few years back. I used to map it so it was just like this new control scheme, except I’d just slide my right thumb up to fire, and it worked perfectly. This double tap to autofire thing is kinda dumb considering half the arsenal is automatic weapons and a lot of the enemies require concentrated fire. The rhythm that you have to double tap is also oddly specific, far too slow for the kind of quick reaction time this game requires on Ultra Violence. Half the time I get it to work, it’s by accident, which made Barrels of Fun exactly the wrong kind of hell. The analogue movement makes thin platforms like in The Chasm a lot easier to navigate though, so that’s a plus. The first iPhone port just got the controls so right, I wish they could be brought back.
  • Controls

Update: still no update in their latest release. Looks like this was really just a quick cash grab. Update: looks like this is a lost cause, boys. After 2 weeks, all we get is “general bug fixes” with no update to the controls. To top it off, I went to load my savegame today and I was clipped through a wall with no option but to restart. Great bug fixing guys. My review keeps getting deleted, so I’ll just have to keep making it. The controls of this game are unusable. The original the app port on the iphone has very smooth responsive controls. This version feels sluggish, the horizontal look is either zero or 100 speed so it’s impossible to aim, the autofire doesn’t work at all, strafing doesn’t feel right. John Carmack’s port was perfect, and the controls were fully customisable. To top it off, the game has a number of graphical issues and the music plays slower than it should. This is a terrible port.
  • Touchscreen controls

    By BabyOne81 (Pcmac user)

I have somewhat of a hard time understanding the problem with the touch controls people have as they aren’t that bad. While the old ones were inarguably better the new controls function properly for me and I can’t say that they have much problem at all. It’s very well rounded port and gives me the ability to run it without internet for some good fun during downtimes or trips.
  • Please give control options

    By blaze144 (Pcmac user)

Honestly I’ve been waited for this app on iOS for a while and for the original the app port to be updated to work. And my prayers have been answered... almost. I’m so pumped to have these games now, but the control scheme has been updated and it is terrible. To top it off there are ZERO options to change it. Why? Both of these games are almost unplayable in the current control scheme. Guns like the chaingun are impossible to continuously fire. Rockets fire while trying to move near a wall. I know there may be some people out there who may find this control scheme usable, but please give us some options. With this current scheme I’m not going to be playing either the app on iOS anymore.
