Software Features and Description

1. The "Automatic Position Reporting System" is a packet communication protocol used by amateur radio operators (hams) around the world, to report position, status, station capabilities, weather or other information in real time.

2. PocketPacket incorporates a software-based TNC, allowing you to directly capture and visualize, or encode and transmit 1200 baud packets (AFSK modulation) using a VHF radio transceiver.

3. With PocketPacket you can also get and send packets over the Internet, by selecting one of the available Tier 2 servers of the global APRS-IS network.

4. PocketPacket started as an APRS client for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad devices, but is also available for the Mac desktop or laptop.

5. By selecting a symbol, you can view the latest information sent for the corresponding object, as well as the raw packets that produced it.

6. Especially with the iOS version and an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, you can have a full-fledged picture of packet activity in a small, portable package - ideal for field work or the ham shack.

7. Incoming data is presented on a map, as most packets define some object, with a specific symbol and location.

8. With PocketPacket you can follow the status of the APRS network or submit your station's info.

9. Monitor moving objects, get real time weather reports directly from local stations and more.

10. All available objects are also shown in a list, which allows you to search for the ones you are looking for.

11. Messages and bulletins are shown in a separate set of screens, structured like an e-mail client.

  • Needs Work

    By Bajabobby (Pcmac user)

Using a Mac Mini and Rigblaster Nomic. VOX PTT doesn't seem to work, but basic PTT through a USB to Serial adapter seems to be working. I'm having big issues with the mapping interface. I can't move about the map and stations aren't showing up until I refresh them by viewing their transmission log??? Without fluid mapping, it's a waste of time and money. Being a HAM app I would definitly suggest starting a forum for the app usage and problem reporting. Google Groups are free and designed for just this sort of thing. If the issues that people are reporting get fixed it will be a 5 star app. Not there yet.
  • The only game in town

    By AD7AN (Pcmac user)

Thanks for making this software available and it seems to be the only game in town. Easy to use compared to past APRS programs, and gets the job done. It is working well for me in all regards. The only upgrade needed would be a interfacing with my old fashioned TNC.
  • Works with Yaesu FT-991

    By Mulisport (Pcmac user)

Reading the reviews I was 50:50 on whether to get this. It did take a little bit of fiddliing with the FT-991 to make it work but it did. Would be nice to add HF support in a future release but for now it works and does what it should. I’ve had no crash issues and recommend this if you want Mac / FT-991 & APRS.
  • Getting better - works with SignalLink now

    By avflinsch (Pcmac user)

Getting better, The SignalLink USB problem has been worked out. Program can now tx & rx, so it does what it is supposed to do. Mapping APRS stations seems to be a bit slow, but signals are showing up where they are supposed to be. AB2RC
