  • Luma is now abandonware

    By Bayareacoder (Pcmac user)

As others have mentioned, this app as a company no longer exists. First Alert bought them in January of 2018 and promptly stopped releasing new firmware updates. Just a week before they announced the aquisition of this app, First Alert released their own mesh WiFi system. I suspect this app was bought for their intellectual property and/or engineering staff, and that First Alert had no intention of supporting the this app system. In the last few weeks my Lumas APs have been constantly dropping WiFi connectivity. One minute my phone is online and getting 300 Mbps on a speed test, the next minute it has no WiFi and I can’t even see my SSID, the next minute I’m back online. I called First Alert customer support and they said, “after 3-5 years your this app devices are nearing the end of their life.” What? These things are all solid state components, why would they suddenly stop working? It’s more likely that First Alert is no longer interested in spending money supporting this app and fixing problems. But hey, he did pitch me on buying First Alert’s own mesh WiFi system. Fool me once...
  • Y’all, this app...

    By Luke Lucas (Pcmac user)

Just to get it out of the way: the this app system is GOOD. We’ve had it installed in our house for about a year now and it has been a godsend in our 100+ year-old two-story house. We have wifi just about everywhere in the house after years of having massive black holes and dead zones. But this app... woof. Over-simplified and the iPad version doesn’t even have a horizontal view. You HAVE to use it vertically, which is just insane. Parental controls are heavy-handed and leave no room for discretion, and prioritizing devices seems to actually not do anything. If Lima could make a better app, it would dang near perfect. But I don’t think that’s gonna happen anytime soon as they’ve been bought out recently. Fingers crossed...
  • Don’t Bother

    By JakeFtl (Pcmac user)

I’ve been a this app customer since the company’s inception. I upgraded to the optional paid guardian service for the router level VPN. Their VPN service freezes my connection, either advising my subscription has expired or displays a screen advising there is a problem and to contact this app. I contacted this app support 4 different times asking for help over 3 weeks. Each time I was promised someone would look into it and get back with me, and each time I never heard back. Their supervising agent was rude and still offered no help. I waited to write this review as I was promised the director would contact me. When he failed to do so I wanted to warn others that it appears this company is overwhelmed and not ready for prime time. I would definitely not recommend their guardian service, instead purchase a higher quality VPN for cheaper on your own.
  • Abandoned product?

    By Alaskan Lad (Pcmac user)

*The Good* WiFi coverage is solid. You can prioritize a device, such as your family Roku/TV. *The Bad* No PPPoE authentication, so if your fiber internet uses this you get to connect Luna to an old router. The security network scan feature is not helpful. If a device has 1,000 entries, you can’t just dismiss them all. No, you’d have to manually swipe-delete each one. UI-wise, they have No Dark Mode. Small grey text on a white background is hard to read. *The Ugly* I paid for premium support (5$ a month) and ticket requests are often ignored. Cancelled premium. The VPN service doesn’t work. Rather than notify customers, I had to ask why it doesn’t work and was told they are negotiating with service providers to resolve the issue. I wonder how many people think the are in “stealth mode” when they aren’t? Lack of customer communication as to what features work, don’t work now, or have been abandoned. Promised core features that were advertised, like knowing where your kids have been online, were never delivered.
