  • news junkie’s dream

    By rcrooks (Pcmac user)

the app delivers what it promises: easy access to news of all kinds, from all over the world. Newspaper sites, tech blogs, podcasts, all nicely organized and easy to use. A really nicely executed app that I will be using a lot.

  • I can see no benefit to this app

First, this app hasn't been updated since 2014. The App Store says it is v1.0, released on Feb 04, 2015. I received v1.0 (2), c2014. As I write this it is Oct 29, 2016. So you will be downloading a 2-year old v1.0 app. Now, that’s commitment by a developer. I thought this app would give me fresh previews of many news sites at once. I would then use those fresh previews to tell me if there was any breaking news, and help me decide which site to go to. Unfortunately, the previews don't update, and can't be manually updated. So, you have to use their 2-year old static previews to blindly go to the site to see what the current page looks like. Easier to just use a tab in Safari! Some of the canned static previews are broke to boot, so you have to use the title to identify what site it will take you to. You can add their predefined sites to a "favorites" page, but the previews are static there also (and continue to be broke if they were broke on the aggregate page). The app does not have pre-defined links to such major sites as CNN, ABC News, NBC News, MSNBC, FOX, Reuters, BBC, NPR, or CNET, and you CAN'T ADD LINKS MANUALLY, a real deal-breaker for me. It does have USA Today, the Associated Press, and many regional newspapers for about 30 total. It also has about 40 world news links, and 50 pre-defined podcasts. It has many local newspapers, but none for me in my city/state of Ft Wayne, IN. And, as with the major papers above, I CAN'T ADD THEM. Although it has several NPR podcasts, it does not have the hourly news summary, and there is NO WAY TO MANUALLY ADD IT. You also can't find all the NPR podcasts by entering "NPR" in the search box. You have to manually look at each preview, as they don't all have "NPR" in the text of their title. So a weak search also. This app will also make something like Little Snitch go nuts with connection requests, so best to just open ports 80 and 443 to the app forever. I can see no benefit to this app whatsoever. I plan to continue using tabs in Safari, where I can even do things like the NPR Hourly News Summary podcast without issue.
