★ ★ ★ Subtitle Extractor Overview

What is Subtitle Extractor? The app is a simple and easy-to-use tool for extracting subtitles from any video file. It supports various subtitle formats and can convert image-based subtitles to text-based using OCR technology. The app also doubles as a subtitle converter and has excellent customer support.

Software Features and Description

1. Hard subtitles are part of the video itself (superimposed text), they cannot be removed or extracted, while Soft Subtitles are rendered as a separate track in a video file and not part of the video itself, so it can be switched ON/OFF and thus can be extracted.

2. Closed Captions are usually inter-weaved in a video stream itself during a broadcast to aid hearing impaired viewers, while subtitles are generally used to aid viewers who don't understand the language.

3. When a movie is ripped from Blu-ray/DVD disc, soft subtitles are kept, most of the time, they are not saved in Text-based files.

4. ● Ability to extract only the needed subtitle if multiple language subtitles are present.

5. ● Converts Image-Based subtitles present in DVD and Blu-ray RIPs to Text-Based subtitles using OCR Technology.

6. So OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology is needed to convert Image-Based subtitles to Text-Based.

7. ● Extracts all the different language subtitles and saves them as separate .SRT files.

8. ● Supports basically any video file that contains subtitles.

9. The problem is that iDevices and QuickTime are not able to read VobSub or PGS subtitles.

10. ● OCR is supported for most widely used subtitle languages such as English, Danish, Dutch, German, French, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, Russian and many more.

11. With VobSub and PGS, each subtitle is an image that will be displayed on top of the video.

  • It worked perfectly for me

    By User345674 (Pcmac user)

Hi, Just purchased/downloaded this app last night. My files types are mkv and the software worked flawlessly to extract the the app files and leave them as srt files in separate folders. I suggest having each mkv file in a separate folder and then opening this application, clicking the green add button, searching for the mkv video file in the folder you created, adding to the software engine, and processing the extraction. You will then find the extracted srt file in an auto-generated folder within the original mkv folder you created. I have not tried this software with other video types, just with mkv.
  • It works!

    By reviewmachine2008 (Pcmac user)

People seem to be giving this guy a hard time. He’s pretty clear about the types of video files and the types of subtitles he can extract from those video files. So I put it to the test and it worked perfectly! MKV and M4V worked perfectly. Worked on SUP, PGS, and SRT. The ones who gave specs about what didn’t work listed weird types of subtitles and video files. Others seem to want the program to extract subtitles from their raw video data. It worked. Stick to the the app types listed above, stick to the video types listed above, and you should be fine. Five stars. Nice job!
  • Fantastic converter!

This does a pretty good job of using OCR to convert SUP subtitles. Not perfect, but none of them are and it’s definitely better than the only other Mac-native alternative that I’ve used in some ways. I do wish it would show the results against the original subtitles to make it easier to fix errors, but I get by. I’d also very much prefer to load the app files by right-clicking, or at least dragging-dropping the file into the app’s window.
  • Love the App

Would be nice if I could select which subtitles to extract instead of having to extracting them all.
