  • Great app at what it does but beware!

    By rekkss (Pcmac user)

I tried to import an .mpg file which definitely contains a closed caption track embedded on the video track of this DVD rip (this kind of CC standard is called EIA-608). Every time I tried to open this .mpg file on the app, either by dragging it in or from the menu bar, would result in the app crashing. Yet, the CC track is definitely there, since it definitely came up on VLC. After trying so many things on this app and elsewhere, I realized that the file has to be an MPEG TS file for 'STR Extractor' to accept it, not just a regular .mpg file which is exactly the same as a .vob file but only with the extension .mpg instead of .vob (like manually changing .vob to .mpg on the file -- this will not work). What you have to do is on VLC transcode this .vob/.mpg file to a MPEG TS file, which will result in a file with the extension .ts but here's the big caveat: since 'STR Extractor' doesn't accept files with a .ts extension, you have to manually rename the file to have the extension .mpg -- again, yes! but the difference now it's that it's not just a VOB file with a .MPG extension, but rather a MPEG TS file with a .MPG extension. This latter file the app will accept and you will finally see your closed caption text and timecodes displayed on the app, which will can now finally export as an the app file. So my suggestion to the developer is this: on your next update please support the importing of .ts files directy; and also make sure that not all .mpg files are treated equally (the ones which are the same as VOB but with the extension changed will not work and will just crash the app; but the ones that are the same as MPEG TS but with the extenstion manually changed to .mpg will do). Even better would be if you could just add support for importing .vob files directly. Please take note of this, as this app hasn't been updated in two years! All this trouble asside, it's quite a useful app.
  • Works good

    By Taffy Chan_1985 (Pcmac user)

I use this app to extract subtitles from iTunes U courses, then I can search the video. I tried some of my video with close caption and works good. It's much easier than CC Extractor on windows. Excellent. But not work for iTunes movies, I think it's a copyright issue.
