  • WAS: More crashes than a demolition derby

    By MoreDisgusted (Pcmac user)

Updated Again: locks up and never plays videos at all. Almost tempted to channel Tony Miles for this review: Utter Crap. Save your money until CB decides its worth their time to write good software. Another update: Chessbase added access to the web apps in your CB account. Seems like a Good Idea, but.... Their app is misconfigured. The 2D board is empty because the piece images break default security settings. So yet another fail from Chessbase GmbH. Ok, time to update the review. The new version of this has fixed the problem of crashing, and has improved the UI. But it now requires the Internet to be accessible to run. Overall, it's an improvement. It's actually useful, now, given access to the net. There's plenty of room yet for improvement, e. g., it still does the "wrong, try again" thing, but I've added a couple of stars to reflect the change. Original 1-star review follows: Was looking forward to getting some ChessBase materials on iOS. Not anymore. Looks like they still have no clue how to write software for anything but Windows. The puzzles themselves are interesting, but the bad UI and frequent crashes make this pretty much useless. If you don't find the right move at first, you simply get a red light. Ask for a hint, and it highlights the piece. It'd be more useful if, like CT-ART, it would also give a demonstration of the technique it's trying to teach. Its "Wrong. Try again." approach to teaching is pretty useless. But more frustrating is the fact that if I play the right move, about 25% of the time the program crashes. I thought it was a Good Thing to solve the puzzle, but when I do the machine goes off and sulks.
  • Useless

    By Journalese (Pcmac user)

Not sure what they're thinking putting this on such a respected brand. Input is clunky and it sometimes takes several tries for a move to register. Some of the variations seem a bit odd too. It may have just been the frustration building up, but it seemed to ask you to perform menial tasks such as find the pin when there was a mate on the board. this app are a decent training tool IF you can go back and figure out why something was played. Otherwise it is an exercise in futility. A this app trainer should let you play around with the solution so you understand what just happened. This doesn't include that, it doesn't give variations when you've solved the problem, and you can't even stop and look at the board when you've found the solution. It just takes you to the next task without giving you time to learn from the puzzle. The result is a waste of time.
  • Still crashes every time I make a move

    By aereoplain (Pcmac user)

Unfortunately, the updated app still crashes every time I reach a specific endgame tactic in which each side has 3 pawns and no pieces. Once I reach this problem, it will crash every time I make a move. If I try to skip this problem, it will crash on the next problem, every time.
  • Impossibly bad

    By dave-dave-dave (Pcmac user)

This is the most confusing, least functional chess this app program I've ever seen for iOS; there's no reason in the world this software should've been released in this lousy condition. It's embarrassing how badly ChessBase is adapting to the new world of tablet computing and mobile apps.
