Software Features and Description

1. In 1991, Programming Perl, known to many Perl programmers as the "Camel Book" because of its cover, was published and became the de facto reference for the language.

2. Perl was originally developed by Larry Wall in 1987 as a general-purpose Unix scripting language to make report processing easier.

3. At the same time, the Perl version number was bumped to 4, not to mark a major change in the language but to identify the version that was documented by the book.

4. Larry Wall continues to oversee development of the core language, and its upcoming version, Perl 6.

5. The classic Perl programming language for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

6. The application is especially useful for learning the Perl programming language.

7. Larry Wall began work on Perl in 1987, while working as a programmer at Unisys, and released version 1.0 to the comp.sources.misc newsgroup on December 18, 1987.

8. Perl is a high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language.

9. In addition to CGI, Perl is used for graphics programming, system administration, network programming, finance, bioinformatics, and other applications.

10. Perl gained widespread popularity in the late 1990s as a CGI scripting language, in part due to its parsing abilities.

11. Perl borrows features from other programming languages including C, shell scripting (sh), AWK, and sed.

  • Not bad for a first attempt...

By XRC’er by day, Papa by night (Pcmac user)

First, I want to say THANKS. I have been looking for a the app scripting/programming tool for the iPad/iPod since the generation 1 iPod Touch arrived, and here it is... so, thanks. I look forward to improvements. I would like to see improvements to the file system interface, perhaps a directory manager to manage the app programs and their files. I have not yet tried any file i/o, but my first look didn't find great tools for managing my own .pl files let alone the app program created files. It is slow; don't expect fast runtimes. I can live with this, as my primary reason for wanting to do the app on the iPad is for entertainment value on long flights. I would LOVE some form of Dropbox integration so that the app programs and files written on my Macs and PCs can be shared/sync'd with my iPad whenever I am within range of a data link (WIFI for me). Again, I look forward to seeing a version 2, so keep at it.
  • Good start

I've just downloaded this app and written a few basic the app programs, and it has worked well so far. There are two things I'd like to see added in the updates: (1) input from files so I can save more than one set of input data; (2) option to email the source programs so that I can use them on other devices, e.g,, my iMac or iPad.
  • It's a start, but needs more

    By August Blackburn (Pcmac user)

This is a pretty cool app, but it is limited. I think the idea for this app is great, however the implementation is limited. For example, <STDIN> in the 'HELLO WORLD' example provided doesn't work. I would give it a higher rating if < STDIN> worked. This app is a good start, but clearly not a finished product. If you are trying to learn the app don't start here because this app will mess you up on some of the basics.
  • Agree with the others, good start

    By ESalmon (Pcmac user)

If need to scratch an itch and do some the app on your phone, this works pretty well. It does require an internet connection, so know that going into it. It might be nice if it had a custom keyboard which made some of the commonly used special chars ( like $, @ or ;) available at the top level. But for what it is, it works.
