Software Features and Description

1. QuakeTracker displays data from the United States Geological Survey on an interactive map, using pulsing yellow circles to indicate a quake's magnitude.

2. The app downloads data from the previous seven days, then displays any quake measuring 3.25 or greater in a time-lapse visualization, showing the magnitude and depth as each quake hits.

3. In addition to the graphical display, both modes list the time, date, location, magnitude, and depth of the quake.

4. The second mode is Top Ten Quakes, which displays the biggest seismic events in the lower 48 states since 1860.

5. Tilt the map using a two-finger swipe to see the quake's depth.

6. QuakeTracker originally appeared in an iPad-optimized issue of Popular Mechanics.

7. Watch U.S. earthquakes unfold, just seconds after they occur.

8. QuakeTracker has two modes.

9. The first is Latest U.S. Seismic Activity.

  • Potentially interesting, but currently useless

    By JAG18039 (Pcmac user)

Looks cool, but with inability to stop and focus on a specific earthquake makes the ap useless. the timeline advances so quickly, user is unable to learn anything. Will keep the ap loaded for a while with the hope for an update to fix this problem. Won't use again however, until problem is fixed. Still waiting...
  • Could be better

    By Multidynamic (Pcmac user)

This app has the potential to be great. Aside from it being a huge ad for the app mechanics magazine, it barrages you with endless annoying popups of recent or historic events. I want to just explore a bit and find out for myself, instead it drives the whole time! Has a map of only the United States and the earthquakes cannot even be clicked on for more information.
  • Great Idea

    By Harmon8tr (Pcmac user)

I second the previous reviewer suggestion. Just have the ability to stop the timeline. The info flies by so fast I can't even read half of it. But think this can be a great app.
  • I really wanted to like this app but it lacks simple but crucial features

    By wls508 (Pcmac user)

Why is there no way to pause the data visualizations as each flies by? All this info is interesting but without a way to keep it on screen to study without it getting swapped out for the next data set makes this app incredibly frustrating. While you can manually select a point along the time continuum to go to, the app remains in its auto-play mode, so you see the info for a few seconds before it moves on to the next data set. If there's a way to pause this data parade (or even slow it down), it's well hidden and breaks conventional iPad user experience guidelines.
