What is Texifier?

Texifier is a LaTeX editor designed for Mac users to edit and typeset LaTeX, Plain TeX, and Markdown documents. It offers a straightforward navigation system, syntax highlighting, autocomplete of commands, and many other features. Texifier's internal typesetter, TexpadTeX, comes with PGF drivers, Native Fonts extensions, Unicode, and more, allowing it to support almost any LaTeX package available. The integrated bundle manager takes care of downloading, installing, and updating LaTeX packages for you, giving you access to almost the entire LaTeX ecosystem without using any more space on your device than needed. Texifier also supports Markdown on an equal footing with LaTeX and Plain TeX.

Software Features and Description

1. Edit your document in Texifier's syntax highlighting editor, browse the document by outline, then when you press Typeset, the document will be transparently converted and typeset by LaTeX, combining the informal ease of Markdown with LaTeX's ability to create beautiful and high quality PDFs.

2. Open a LaTeX root file, and Texifier will scan it, open any referenced files, extract the document structure for display in the outline view, and configure the typesetter according to the packages and tools used by your document.

3. Edit and typeset LaTeX, Plain TeX and Markdown on your Mac using Texifier, formerly known as Texpad.

4. Texifier's editor has syntax highlighting, a choice of themes, autocomplete of commands including those defined in your document, autofill for \cite and \ref commands, and many other features.

5. Additionally, Texifier's outline lists all labels, figures, tables, todos and the search pane can search and replace across your entire project using either normal text searches, or regular expression searches.

6. The integrated bundle manager takes care of downloading, installing and updating LaTeX packages for you, giving you access to almost the entire LaTeX ecosystem without using any more space on your device than needed.

7. These are fully integrated into Texifier so press typeset, and Texifier will run the typeset in the Cloud, presenting the results just as if it had been typeset on your device.

8. Texifier is a LaTeX editor designed for straightforward navigation, editing and typesetting of projects of any size.

9. Likewise Plain TeX users can edit and typeset their documents in Texifier.

10. TexpadTeX - Texifier's internal, no internet connection required, typesetter comes with PGF drivers, Native Fonts extensions, Unicode and more.

11. Texifier supports Markdown on an equal footing with LaTeX.

  • Nice Start but the Text Editor is Terrible

    By iPhonerarooni (Pcmac user)

This is a really nice app for light latex writing and the built-in PDF viewer is great. The ability to click on typesetting errors and have it take you to the offending latex source is handy but Emacs/Aquamacs can do that too. But if you feel like a change from Aquamacs and Auctex, this is a fun alternative. However, the editor is really bad; it's genuinely terrible. Unbelievably, it has no wordwrap, so your document quickly becomes a complete mess as you edit it. The most important thing in an editor is the editor. As a latex platform, this has some great bells and whistles -- the document outline pane is awesome -- but it's missing the most basic editor functions. The author needs to focus on what's required before adding extra features. Until he does, this is a great tool for short documents but you can't do serious writing without having a real text editor. (At the very least, you must also add custom key-bindings, with standard ones, e.g., Emacs, predefined…)
  • Excellent LaTeX editor, consistent with the iOS version

    By _NM_ (Pcmac user)

Many of the concerns of the now years old, low-star ratings are irrelevant. The program works fine and has a healthy set of features and a lot for me to still explore. I was pleasantly surprised by the consistency of its user interface compard to its iOS version that I also purchased and use with an iPad Pro. One of the best features is how projects with multiple files are handled. The structure of sections and subsections remains intact. TeXShop does not manage projects at all. TeXStudio does a decent job, but ends up opening lots of files. I prefer how Texpad handles multifile project better than any tool so far on macOS, Windows and Linux. Of course you can use an external TeX installation such as MacTeX instead of the internal TeX compiler that has limitations. If you are using markup, you should definitely explore LaTeX. The learning curve is not that steep. I purchased a $5 tutorial from Packt Publishing and could start right away. The best things about LaTeX include its extensive options (nothing impossible in the age of web searches and TeX Stack Exchange), cross-platform compatibility, open-source, ..., and most importantly, the end product that is unmatched by anything else.
  • Interface problems

    By dsnau (Pcmac user)

I really *wanted* to like Texpad -- but I've had enough problems with its interface that I've decided to go back to TeXShop. Ironically, the previous reviewers' complaints aren't problems for me at all. I prefer Texpad's soft line-wrapping to Emacs's hard line-wrapping, I don't want automatic typesetting, and I can use Keyboard Maestro to create keyboard shortcuts. For me, the worst problems are the following: (1) In almost all other Mac apps, the way to focus on a pane is to click on it -- but in Texpad, clicking on the PDF pane moves the focus to the LaTeX pane. I've lost count of the number of times I've corrupted a LaTeX source file by clicking on the PDF pane and hitting the spacebar in an attempt to see the next page of the PDF output. (2) Unlike most modern Mac apps for text-editing, Texpad's Edit menu doesn't gray-out the "Undo" and "Redo" commands when they're inapplicable, and when they're applicable it doesn't tell what they're to undo or redo. (3) Texpad only allows one window per document. If I want to see the contents of two LaTeX source files simultaneously, I can open them in two windows *except* when they are part of the same LaTeX document (e.g., two chapters of a book), in which case I can't. This would be much less of a problem if there were a way to split the LaTeX pane into two views, but there isn't.
  • Mac version not up to date

    By mathprof (Pcmac user)

I love the iPad version of this program. I decided to purchase the Mac version based on this and the fact that the Mac version, in the demo, automatically typeset your project during pauses. The version you get from the Mac App Store doesn't do this. I hope that they update the version that you get from the Mac app store automatically like, I presume, they do for the iPad version using iTunes. They had an explanation about this issue on the webpage where you get the demo, but I guess I'm out of luck, for now, since the Mac App Store page doesn't have the current version. I like the application, but due to this reason and my dissapointment for not having the autotext in the version I purchased, I'm just giving a rating of 2 stars. Hopefully this will get fixed and we'll be able to update our version of this software like we do for all the other applications I've purchased for my Mac.
