  • Instructions?

There are no visable instructions here. Did I miss something? How does a child use this?

We have been using iPad apps for letters and phonics for a while now. In my opinion, even when they hold my girl's attention, they are too distracting; the focus is not on the letters or their sounds, but rather on the pictures and sounds related to the pictures (animal sounds, object sounds, etc. rather than letter sounds), in addition to the "game" itself. In the end, I found my girl did not remember anything except for the bells and whistles. This application is exceptional in its simplicity and its quiet focus on the letters and sounds. I think we underestimate our children's interest in learning itself. We think we have to have heavy stimulation for them to stay focused, but I think that is not the case. The calm low voice and the pleasant colors help continue without getting overexcited and simply just touching random buttons. Plus, my girl especially liked the way she can record her voice and hear herself say the letter or sound.
  • Simple, non-distracting interface

I was worried given two recent nasty reviews, but after trying this app out, I don't think they are warranted. For special needs, this is the perfect solution for some students who need minimal visual distractions. Clean, simple interface with options to practice tracing, or recording letter names/sounds. I like the option to jump to exactly the letter wanted. There is a page with links to this developer's apps, although it is protected by a parental gate, which is good. I would also like to see an option where I can shut off the "pencil" sound effect when tracing, while still hearing the other cues/voiceover. Some students with special needs may have trouble with this sound, and others will really enjoy the auditory feedback while tracing.
  • Thank you for this app!

Peaceful. Purposeful. This app gives parents and children a taste of two of the qualities I love most about the Montessori method. The app does away with the cobwebs of whiz-bang flashiness, meaningless compliments, prizes, bonus points, and all the rest of the try-to-give-them-self-esteem silliness. Intro to Letters shows how Montessori allows children to be craftsmen. Not only do my children enjoy working with this app (on Saturdays: the only day of the week we allow screen-time), but I have found it useful at parties and adult get-togethers to pull out the Intro to Letters and show other parents a bit about the Montessori method without coming on too strong with my enthusiasm for Montessori. Once they're intrigued, it's easier to talk them into visiting the school for an observation of the actual classroom and the chance to see children working within the full context of Montessori.
