★ ★ ★ Freerice Overview

What is Freerice? Freerice is a trivia game that allows users to generate money for the UN World Food Programme by answering questions correctly. The money generated is used to provide assistance to those in need, and 100% of the funds raised on Freerice go to the World Food Programme.

Software Features and Description

1. The amount of money generated when you see an ad can vary, but overall, money raised on Freerice each day from every right answer is roughly equivalent to what the UN World Food Programme spends to purchase 5 grains of rice.

2. But regardless of the type of assistance, you can be sure that 100% of all funds generated on Freerice go to the World Food Programme, and 93.5% of every payment received by the World Food Programme goes directly to helping children and their families.

3. With dozens of categories — from English vocabulary to famous paintings — you can quiz yourself on your favourite subject, and generate money to support the World Food Programme at the same time.

4. When you see one of these ads (if it is a commercial ad and you are eligible to see it), you trigger a financial payment to the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to support its work saving and changing lives around the world.

5. This money is used for many types of assistance — not just rice — depending on where needs are greatest.

6. Freerice does not earn or keep any money it raises.

7. Freerice is the fun and educational trivia game that lets you make a difference and get smarter — just by playing.

8. By playing, you are generating the money that pays for this rice.

9. Here's how it works: as you play Freerice and answer questions right, ads appear on your screen.

10. In the game, these payments are represented via grains of rice.

  • App Improvements

    By Zenkid27 (Pcmac user)

First let me say I love the app. It's by the far the best way to build a vocabulary and do something positive for the world at the same time. I would love if the app somehow recorded what words I got wrong so I can go back and look them up. This would be a nice feature since when I'm on a streak the last thing I want to do is open another app to look up the word I just got wrong. This way, I continue and look up the words after. Cheers!
  • Love this app but...

    By caesertheape19 (Pcmac user)

I love using this app, I remember using the website back in elementary too! Not only do i get to brush up on my vocabulary but I’m helping others get food in the process. My only problem is it’s so slow sometimes! I press on the answer and it takes like 15 seconds to process it, sometimes clicking on it again helps but then it acts like you answered the next question and it ends up giving you a wrong answer. I would give it five stars if it wasn’t for the annoying lag, but besides that great game!
  • Love it, but no level past 3 on Countries?

    By slam_momsby (Pcmac user)

I was happy to see that Free Rice had a mobile app after having played on desktop years ago. A couple things I’ve noticed... 1) When I reach level 3 of the Identify Countries on the Map category, it cycles through the same 30 some-odd (estimation) countries and doesn’t progress to level 4 or 5. I checked the “difficulty level” tab, and levels 4 and 5 are unavailable - is this because I haven’t reached them yet? Even if this is the case, I’ve cycled through the same countries many times and haven’t progressed. Not sure if this is a bug, or if the game developers have yet to offer levels 4 and 5 (which would be greatly appreciated!). 2) In the World and Canadian Geography section, the diagrams that go along with the questions do not always appear (can click on the “tap to show image” selection, but screen is blank behind it). Thanks!
  • Wonderful idea but very slow

By Wow... Just Wow (Pcmac user)

I was stoked that the website had an app but every time I select an answer it takes 30 seconds to process. I love the idea behind the app but it’s way too slow. Once this problem is fixed it’ll definitely be a 5 star app. Update: the speed problem was fixed and it’s so great. Definitely recommend to anyone interested in doing a good deed while learning!
