  • The Perfect App for Studio Logging! (32,000 hour update)

By Bill at KPTZ (Pcmac user)

After nearly 4 years (about 32,000 continuous hours)of flauless operation, this app has become indispensible to our community radio station. It does what it was designed to do simply and without an interruption (except for OS update restarts). I was dismayed to see the two one star reviews for this app. They seem to be saying “…this screwdriver makes a terrible hammer.” By the way, this app can record from digital or analog line input as well as the microphone. While I haven’t tried it, my guess is that an optical cable from the the app line out to line in jacks would allow you to record anything you can direct to the output, including streaming the app without Soundflower. I’m the Chief Engineer for a small full power FM community radio station. We do a lot of our own programming and because so much of what we do is live, we sometimes broadcast a real gem and curse ourselves for havint it recorded. I spent months trying to come up with a solution that would solve all the technical problems and make sure eveyone at the station could have access to the material at their edit stations. There are lots of very expensive systems that solve this problem but we just don’t have the budget for that kind of thing. Along comes this app! Problem solved. I bought a used Mac Mini on eBay and a copy of this app. I had a few questions and was delighted that Pavel took the time to answer them. The support has been fantastic. At our station AES digital the app feeds directly to our transmitter. The mini has an S/PDIF digital optical line input. It was easy to branch digital the app off to the Mini through an AES to S/PDIF optical converter (Hosa ODL312). this app encodes the the app using Apple Lossless Encoding so we full fidelity digital the app! I set the Mini up as a file server on the station’s LAN and added an external 3TB USB disk drive. Total price under $600. The other hardware systems I looked at were around $5000. Now we record everything that goes over the station 24 hours a day. With the 3TB drive we can record a year of broadcasts. Any DAW in the station can download program files and edit them to make new best of or highlights shows. This has turned out the be the most popular project I’ve done in the 3 years the station has been on the air. Thanks Pavel for a great app!

Requires third party "Soundflowerbed" to record MAC sounds; doesn't work with or without.
