★ ★ ★ Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro Overview

What is Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro? MTH Pro is a comprehensive music app that helps users improve their musicality, practice chord-scales, voicings, upper structures, target notes, reharmonization, and develop their own songs. It features pro quality backing tracks, A.I. players, harmony map, mixer and sound, interactive map, and add-ons such as the Analyzer, Jazz Standards, and Bird Bebop.

Software Features and Description

1. Unlike other play-along apps (which only understand chord symbols), Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro uses harmonic functions, so that the A.I. players can decide which voicings and bass-lines are the best to use in each song.

2. Write a chord progression as text and the Analyzer will do the rest! It finds key centers, modulations, pivot chords and of course, functional analysis and chord-scales for every chord in the song.

3. With pro quality backing tracks, and thousands of tunes fully analyzed, Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro will take your playing to the next level in no time.

4. The seven levels in the map will take you from simple diatonic functions and cadences to the most complex advanced tonal harmony concepts in no time.

5. Load your favorite players and learn how they would play chords over specific changes.

6. With ten different map templates, from Baroque to Jazz, MTH Pro knows how different players will approach chord changes.

7. Mapping Tonal Harmony will always play the right stuff.

8. You want Duke to play the guitar? or on a Rhodes? Which type of bass do you need? Drums? Adjust volumes, compression, reverb.

9. From Classical to Jazz to Pop, MTH Pro knows it all! If you are a teacher you know how vast the world of harmony is.

10. Play accompanied by an app that understands how harmony works.

11. Open MUSIC-XML files (such as iReal Pro), and have the entire progression analyzed and ready to play.

  • Overly Complex UI & Really Steep Learning Curve

    By Chris Manusia (Pcmac user)

This is such an unintuitive UI: it's way more complex than it needs to be. There is a steep learning curve for this. Chordbot & Suggester gets the job done w/ a much more streamlined & user-friendly UI. If you do a google search for reviews on this program you will see that many other people echo the same sentiment that I've described. Wish I never downloaded this or that I could've tried this out for some time before purchasing. I'm currently asking Apple App Store for a refund.
  • Jaw Dropping Incredible!

    By soundoggy (Pcmac user)

Version 7 takes this app to a whole nother level for songwriting, practicing and studying music theory. (Ignore negative reviews for Version 5 or earlier — this is a complete rework!) The software has evolved beyond its jazz roots to encompass all genres of music, including pop, rock and blues. It covers about anything you can think of, from noodling around with chord changes and voicings, to creating and printing out scores for other players. You can also use it as a "backup musicians" for practicing scales and songs. The more screen real estate you have the better because its nice to keep numerous panels open when composing; my experience was better on my iMac than my MacBook — but the app is still effective on either. If you have decent speakers connected (or headphones) the experience is even better, because the audio samples used for drums, piano, and bass are of very high quality. You can export MIDI to your DAW after composition, but I wish there was a way for it to send MIDI in real time via some sort of synch or port (there may be already, I just haven’t been able to do it). Important to note: the developer is updating this regularly, and it has improved a LOT since some of the earlier Version 5 reviews. Yeah, it sounds fantastic, but did I mention it also looks beautiful? Leonardo da Vinci would approve of the the app screen and layout!
  • Misleading, and some disappointment but overall brilliant

    By Aregey2 (Pcmac user)

The app has positive qualities, however ultimately there are problems. It’s misleading, because it is not the same as the iPad version. This is an older, outdated version and it seems they are not working to update it. Don’t be fooled. You cannot make long progressions. It is lacking features the iPad version has, such as modulation built in. Worst of all, the MIDI bouncing feature appears to have issues at first (though I resolved those by messing with it and manually making a folder and then manually adding the .mid file extension… still seems silly). That said this program, otherwise, is absolutely brilliant for teaching harmony. Absolutely brilliant. It’s so good for that that I have to say that I would have given this 1-2 stars for the severity of some of the above problems (IMO) but since it’s so great otherwise, I simply don’t really care that much.
  • A Must-have App!

    By Eddie Majour (Pcmac user)

This is one of the must-have app to add in your tool box. The layout is easy to understand, yet the contents are so powerful. There are a tone of Jazz, Pop, Contemporary, AND MORE, exercises or workout to choose from. It does take a little bit of playing around with in order to really know what you’re doing and take full advantage of the App’s capabilities, but, trust me, this app is worth ever penny. I would hlighly recommend using this app with Tessitura Pro if you are serious about learning new concepts etc. In fact, I would like to see these two apps combined even if the price were to go up a little. In any case, buy this app right now, spend some time watching the tutorials, then, dive in and experience Tonal Harmony!.
