★ ★ ★ RMS Viewer Overview

What is RMS Viewer?

RMS Viewer is a Mac application that allows users to view Microsoft Windows Rights Management protected documents on their Mac computers. The app requires connectivity to an RMS Rendering Server running in the corporate network and is designed to enable employees to consume protected documents on corporate-enabled mobile devices and computers running Max OSX.

Software Features and Description

1. The RMS Viewer App registers itself to the file types available for RMS and when rights management protection is detected, the mobile app sends the protected document to a RMS Rendering server hosted in the corporate network.

2. RMS Viewer enables Mac computers to consume Microsoft Windows Rights Management protected documents recieved by mail or any other application.

3. Windows Information Rights Management protects typical office documents using strong encryption and allows the use of these documents only on dedicated enrolled Desktop Computers.

4. But because of the nature of these documents it is critical for a corporation to enable its employees to consume the documents also on corporate enabled mobile devices and Computers running Max OSX.

5. The converted document will be received by the mobile app and displayed within an app viewer, which will not allow to print or forward the protected document.

6. IMPORTANT: This application requires connectivity to an RMS Rendering Server running in your corporate network.

7. The RMS Rendering Server will decrypt and convert the document if the user has permissions to view the document.

8. Documents can be stored on the device with strong encryption, in order to be viewed later even when offline.

  • Oddly Unfriendly

I was hopeful to use this application to open XPS files on my new MacBook Pro. Installation was fine but on opening the application the first time (after double clicking on an XPS file) it prompted for a server, user name and password. I was initially confused as to what it was asking for, but figured it must be asking for an SMTP server and my email user name and password. I couldn't say if that was a correct assumption, as using Gmail as the server I was unable to successfully enter the fields. The only error message? "Error: No Error.".

  • No directions

This app has no diretions on how to use it. When I tried, it said that I must register my device first.
  • Server needed?

    By Stevenandcat (Pcmac user)

Well I got this app to open an xps document and hopefully turn it into a PDF, but when I tried to open the xps file with the app, it said I had to enroll my device before it can be used for viewing the app secured documents which would be fine, but to enroll you need a server and username and password for said server. Now I’m not sure what server they want, maybe the school’s server name where the file was originally saved, maybe my server(?) which I dont think I have. Anyways This isn’t an app thats useful for opening .xps files.
