Great design and functionality, but a few issues
By emschultz (Pcmac user)
This has been my favorite nightstand clock app to use with my iPhone 5s in an Elevation dock I keep on my nightstand. It has lovely animation that reminds me of the old this app my parents used when I was a child. And the icon looks great too.
With that said, it's not perfect. The last update (released in February 2014) changed the brightness level so it can't get as dim as it used to like in previous versions. Even with my iPhone's screen brightness turned all the way down and the dimmest screen setting selected in this app, it's now a bit too bright and is annoying at night.
Second, the portrait orientation mode isn't true portrait orientation mode since Control Center (which is part of iOS) isn't accessible from the bottom of the screen when it's upright - it can only be accessed from the left side of the screen when I have my iPhone docked. This is silly and annoying since the iPhone's orientation is easy to access and detect for developers and from my own (very brief) foray into learning app development, it's straightforward to incorporate into how an app works.
If these two issues were fixed, this would pretty much be my perfect nightstand clock app.

Wanted to like it but...

There are many things wrong with this app. It is visually pleasing, but beyond that the sound of the clicking is irritatingly fake sounding. The alarm volume is ridiculously low. It could never wake me up out of a deep sleep. As others have mentioned, you can’t play your music with this app running. I tried using the iPhone’s internal alarm system along with this app, and I found that the the app sound interrupts the alarm noise. So again, if you depend on it for an alarm clock, you probably won’t wake up. I could see myself using it as a clock on my desk while I was working, but I could not depend on this to wake me up for work.

Not bad

I’m amazed at how hard it is to find a good nightstand clock app. They all have some nice qualities and yet some serious problems. In the case of Cateater’s app, the size of the display and the animation are well done. But the brightness is a big problem. The single “dim” setting is too bright, and the background glow around the numbers doesn’t help. If the background and brightness were more customizable, this would be the perfect nightstand app. But as it is now, it’s unusable for me.
