Software Features and Description

1. Getting a hold on those key signatures is a great way to improve your musical knowledge and skills in all areas including the reading of number charts, and the ability to perform key changes immediately.

2. Although it is ideal to play along in order to familiarize yourself with how the chords relate to each other on your instrument, you can still practice your knowledge while sitting on the bus, or waiting for your train.

3. Many professional musicians use number charts (Nashville Numbers, Roman Numerals) to notate the songs they are to perform.

4. Key Degrees is a tool designed to help musicians practice and memorize key signatures.

5. One of the benefits to writing them out as numbers as opposed to using chord names is that a chart will only need to be written once.

6. It’s your job to play through this progression on your instrument using the key signature provided.

7. Key Degrees will display a random and playable 4 bar chord progression.

8. If you are told to play the progression 1 4 5 1 in C Major, you would play C F G C.

9. ‘Beginner’ starts you off with just 3 keys and progressions containing only the degrees 1, 4, and 5.

10. As you work your way through the levels more degrees are added along with even more keys to test yourself on.

11. Each number corresponds to a chord in that key signature.

  • Potential to be a great app with some changes!

This is a useful app with the potential to become a great app with some refinements. First, the chords in a chord progression should follow the pattern as shown in the harmonized major and minor scales. For major scales, the pattern is: I ii iii IV V vi vii° where upper-case roman numerals represent major chords, lower-case represent minor chords, and ° indicates diminished chords. And for minor scales, the pattern is: i ii° III iv v VI VII When displaying the progression, keyDegrees should replace the all upper-case roman numerals it now uses with the proper upper-case and lower-case numerals as shown above, including the diminished symbol. (There are a few other accepted ways to indicate diminished chords as an alternative.) --- A further improvement would be to include 7th chords as an option. For major 7th chords, the pattern is: Imaj7 ii7 iii7 IVmaj7 V7 vi7 vi7b5 where maj7 is the major 7th chord, lower-case with a 7 is the minor 7th chord, and vi7b5 is the minor 7th flat 5 chord. And for minor 7th chords, the pattern is: i7 ii7b5 IIImaj7 iv7 v7 VImaj7 VII7 Perhaps an option for the user to select triad chords or 7th chords would be the most practical. --- Secondly, the "Chart" that is provided as a guide appears to be two tables with only part of the major and minor scales, in alphabetical order. This is not as useful as it could be for two reasons. First, and most important, it does not indicate which chords are major, minor, diminish, etc. And second, it is not a complete list of all 24 keys (12 major/12 minor). The chart for the major scale should be in the Circle of Fifths order, and follow this pattern: Major Keys 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 C Dm Em F G Am B° G Am Bm C D Em F#° D A E B F# Gb etc. Db Ab Eb Bb F where 'm' indicates a minor chord, and ° indicates a diminished chord. The enharmonic the app names of C#, G#, D#, an A# could also be included. The chart for the minor scale should also follow the Circle of Fifths order, and follow this pattern: Minor Keys 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Am B° C Dm Em F G Em F#° G Am Bm C D Bm F#m C#m G#m Ebm etc. Bbm Fm Cm Gm Dm And finally, a button to allow the user to see the proper chords for the given progression would be very helpful. For example, in the the app of C major, the progression "vi ii V I", would show: C major vi ii V I Am Dm F C End of Review
