Software Features and Description

1. On the 16 × 16 grid of buttons, basically, the horizontal direction is time, and the vertical direction is pitch.By laying sounds on these buttons, you can combine rhythms and melodies to produce music.

2. TNR-i can produce 16 types of sounds at the same time (16 layers), and it can remember up to 16 song patterns produced using those sounds (16 blocks).

3. The preset sounds of TNR-i are the same as those of the TENORI-ON, and the performance files are also compatible.

4. If you update the TENORI-ON (TNR-w or TNR-o) to version 2.1 and use it with TNR-i, you can participate in sessions using the TENORI-ON (TNR-w or TNR-o).

5. In draw mode, you can perform music by tracing your finger across the buttons as if drawing a picture.

6. In the exciting random mode, the sounds that you arrange are not just played in order—the melody and rhythm constantly change as twists are added.

7. The appeal of TNR-i isn't just limited to its faithful duplication of the TENORI-ON concept and its design and interface, which were developed under the supervision of Toshio Iwai.

8. By switching between song patterns in real time, you can produce a rich variety of musical expressions.

9. In score mode, the most fundamental of the modes, you can arrange sounds horizontally (temporally) and vertically (by pitch).

10. You can use iTunes to transfer performance files saved on your TENORI-ON SD card to TNR-i.

11. In bounce mode, the glowing lights are like bouncing balls that produce sound when they fall.

  • Thanks for the fix Yamaha!

    By WVWRX (Pcmac user)

Yamaha has addressed the issues with the v1.4 update and all seems to be working well again! If I were only comparing it to the hardware Tenori-On, I would rate it 5 stars - It does just about everything the hardware version does... but it also doesn't do any of the things the hardware unit doesn't do, and there's some room for improvement. Musically, I find Tenori-Ons to be rather restrictive, but if you can learn to work within this framework, there's some good music to be made - music which you might not have composed otherwise.
  • Brilliant Instrument and Toy!

    By PhotoFanatic (Pcmac user)

Ever since the Tenori-On came out, I've wanted one. The instrument is a piece of art that you use to create art. It's ingeniously designed, and especially for people who are visually and musically intuitive, its interface is really neat. Layers, blocks, voices, etc. can be changed using button shortcuts that combine the Left and Right buttons with rows, columns, and points on the grid. And until you figure out the shortcut buttons, there's a great menu system. Especially since adding MIDI abilities, this is a powerful instrument for creating music. It's also very intuitive and fun. I hear it's beautiful on iPad. Personally, I only have an iPhone, and I'm shocked at how well it works. Don't expect to get the right note the first time every time on the small screen. But it does work. And I love having such a fun and powerful music creation program in my pocket. Six stars out of five. Thank you, Yamaha, for making the Tenori-On experience available to so many folks with this app. (BTW, there have been some complaints about glitches and stability in the past. As of Feb 2013, it seems solid.)
  • Because selling musical software isn’t enough...

    By Blvvthe (Pcmac user)

…Yamaha has apparently decided to turn to selling eyeballs. I’m glad their update notes mentioned their privacy policy, because it wouldn’t have dawned on me that an otherwise reputable company in this day and age would have language like that in their privacy policy. Basically, there isn’t a privacy policy. Their language basically admits that they plan on selling as much of your personal information as they can get their greedy mitts on to any marketeers they like, and if you don’t like it, you can always click the unsubscribe link in the spam you’ll be getting. Other than that, it’s a fun app. :-P
  • Too much fun!

    By woodondrums (Pcmac user)

This thing is great, does exactly what it's supposed to do, and has a ton of options like allowing multiple time signatures to play simultaneously or switching to different scales like dorian, locrian, etc. The other free versions out there are great too, but the extra cash this one costs goes straight into finely-tuned manipulation abilities. So happy this is out there and I don't have to buy the $1000 hardware version. Only two major drawbacks are that there's no delay effect (only reverb and chorus), and that the tones are a little on the lame side.
