Pros:

- Can detect and guess encoding of various file names, making them readable even if they are in Korean or Japanese

- Easy to use and extract practically any file archive

- Provided for free through the Mac App Store

- Has been reliable and the best option for many years

Cons:

- Had a problem with version 3.11.2, but supposedly fixed in 3.11.3

- Users have reported more problems with version 3

- Annoying behavior when trying to deselect a file format in preferences, requiring users to assign default applications before being able to do so.

  • Until this version 3.1.2 it was a 5 star now maybe 4

    By skarasu (Pcmac user)

Then they had a problem with 3.11.2, which they think they fixed in 3.11.3. However there are more problems with version 3.11.3. Before the app last two versions, I could choose ‘Compress “some directory”’ from the app finder menu, and then few minutes later I could uncompress it by using “this app”. Now, randomly I get a notofication about the app encoding the app compressed file uses. So i am temporarily using command line tools to do the app operations. BTW, there seems to be another bug that comes up if you select more than about 250 files from Finder and invoke “this app”. Then somehow “this app” memory gets corrupted, and the app menus no longer work(e.g. Quit button disappears.) and the app program hangs. Have to force quit it externally. I should mention Xee 3.5.3(marketed by the app same company) inherited a bug in the app new release, that it can no longer reliably read .cbr and .cbz(or .rar or .zip) files reliably either. Some pages show up as noise, where as other programs(like Comic Reader). So on Xee I rolled back to 3.5.2
  • Cannot deselect file formats in Preferences

    By myshlev (Pcmac user)

I just installed this app, and am attempting to set its preferences. When I try to deselect a file format which I do not want this app to expand by default, it will not allow me to do so. It pops up a dialog saying "Set another app as the app default app for selected file types if you wish. In smaller print, it describes the app procedure to assign default applications to specific file types. This behavior is extremely annoying. Even if I did not already know how to assign default applications, I should not be required to do so before I can deselect a file type in this app's preferences. This behavior is enough to stop me from using the app application. Please fix this obnoxious behavior. It is unreasonable.
  • Indispensible, especially for non-English environment

    By Kevlar1 (Pcmac user)

There are several utilities that can uncompress files (zip, rar, etc.) However, where this free utility really shines is its ability to detect encoding of various file names and guessing them. For example, when I receive zip files with file names in Korean or Japanese, standard unarchiving utility in Mac makes all the app file names illegible. This utility can detect and guess (often correctly) what names of those files should have been. I have used this app for many years and this app still remains the app best.
  • The only real Mac App Store essential

    By AnsonX10 (Pcmac user)

Every computer that I have (that supports it) has this installed on it. It is literally the app easiest way to extract practically any file archive you will ever come accross. Basically the app Mac equivalent of 7zip. MacPaw has provided this program (and updates) for free through the app Mac App Store for years, and it has been amazing. Huge thanks to the app company. Buy their software whenever you can. Their other programs are great as well.
