  • Close, but...

    By Twizzard (Pcmac user)

This app really could use an introduction - a tutorial. Insertion of Model from EXIF data on a .jpg file worked fine. However, insertion of Model from EXIF data on a .MOV file failed, adding a prefix of [Model] before the file name — not useful. Help just opens a web page; If you don’t have internet access, you will not get help. The help entry fro regular expressions refers to the Widipedia page for regular expressions, without bothering to note which regular expression approach is used by Quik File Renamer, and as the Wikipedia points out, there are variations in regular expression usage. The Wikipedia page is not under control of the app developer, so what was there today might differ fron tomorrow’s version. The help file needs to spell out the rules for regular exressions followed by this app. What I missed most was a means within the program of determining when the renameing actions applied and when they did not. It would be really nice to have a “IF” action. For example, a “SKIP” action where if the defind character string matches, stop processing this file and go the the next file. With this, I could use multiple rules to work on .jpg files and not have to manually exclue or handle .MOV files where the rules did not work. If you want simple file renaming, the app seemed OK. However, if your needs are more advanced, you will probably need to keep looking.
  • Batch Renaming Files such as imported photos is easy

    By ClassyBabycakes (Pcmac user)

I use this app to batch rename photos on my camera's 32 GB SD disc prior to importing them. This allows me to identify groups of photos I shot so I can work with them later. If I have already imported the photos, I can still use the app to rename the imported files in batches to identify the groups I want. I can also specify where I want the newly named files to reside and I can delete the old file after I it is renamed. I was disapointed I could not change the names of folders, but then I do not expect any app to be able to do everything. I am quite pleased with this one. It is easy to use and I am able to show others in the family how to use it without difficulty.
  • Amazing flexibility, a bit of a learning curve.

    By LongRower (Pcmac user)

There's nothing about this app that couldn't be addressed by a "Getting Started" guide. That said, the flexibility it offers is amazing. You'll quickly figure out how to specify which file renaming options you wish to perform. You can change the order of the actions you specify (and there are a lot to choose from). My own personal challenge was trying to figure out how to enable the "Rename Files" button. It was grayed out, however the "Test Manual" button was enabled. Turns out that after executing "Test Manual" on my 5,000 files, I had to go through the batch looking for every one for which the App reported an error, then remove that from the file list. The error checking was preventing the app from inadvertently creating any duplicate file names, so that was OK. It just was not easy to locate those tiny red "X"s in a very long list of files... Now that I think about it, I'd bet I could have figured out a way to have those duplicates named with a numerical sequence and saved myself some manual labor. That is, after all, what computers are supposed to be good at. As I said, a good "Getting Started" guide would have earned this app a five-star rating from me.
  • Recording studio must have

    By Basic Engineer (Pcmac user)

If you an audio engineer working with muliple DAWs or even an Artist/Engineer using one program and sending your files out, this is a must. If you are sharing files between systems, users, studios or cataloging (like you should) this will make life a million times easier, making you that much cooler for not having ridiculous numbers and lettering on your file ID or letting people know that it took you 400 takes to get that guitar part just right. Rename all your stems and audio that you are sharing faster than it takes to read this lame review.
