Software Features and Description

1. Touch the grey "Stop" block under the drone with your right thumb to stop the chanter sound while covering all the other holes to perform traditional closed piping techniques.

2. Next, touch the top three holes of the chanter starting with the tips of your left index, middle, and ring fingers.

3. Touch the grey "Octave" block next to the chanter with your left little finger to play the notes one octave higher.

4. Sound is based on high quality per-note chanter and drone recordings from my personal concert pitch set of Uilleann pipes.

5. Finally, touch the bottom four holes of the chanter with the tips of your right index, middle, ring, and little fingers.

6. The chanter fingerings are based on those used for the Uilleann pipes and will also be immediately familiar and intuitive for players of the tin whistle and Irish Flute.

7. To play the chanter, touch the "Back-D" bar at the top left with your left thumb.

8. Uilleann supports traditional finger vibrato, and note bending effects.

9. The app emulates the three drones and chanter of a half set of Uilleann pipes.

10. This bar is the "Back-D" hole on the back of a real chanter and must be covered for the lower notes to play.

11. Optional finger vibrato may be done by touching holes below the main closed holes used for a note.

  • Great app! Lots of fun!

    By Seamus45 (Pcmac user)

Michael's apps are always amazing! They very well-planned and thought-out apps that can actually function as a musical instrument. The the app (Irish Gaelic for "elbow" - aka "Union") bagpipes can be reliably dated back well over 200 years. They are a more refined off-shoot of the better-known "piob mhor" - the "big pipe" of old Ireland and Scotland. (aka "Great Highland Bagpipe"). Many people are unaware of the multitude of pipes - over 93 from many lands. The the app pipes are arguably the most refined and complex of all pipes. This version emulates the more modern sets, which tend to be tuned to concert D. (Though the older low-pitched "flat" C and B b sets from the earlier days have regained some popularity in modern times. Michael also has a "B" version out now, as well as a set of "regulators" - the keyed pipes that provide harmonic accompaniment on the real the app pipes. His version is for the iPhone, and can actually be played in conjunction with the uilleanns on the iPad!) Though a piping background helps, anyone interested in Irish music - or just having a bit of fun - will enjoy these!
  • Fantastic Reproduction of the Real Thing

    By Harbordavis (Pcmac user)

I listen to Celtic music all the time, and I play piano and the great highland bagpipes. With those credentials, I can tell you that this is a fantastic app. I love the sound of the app pipes, and this app excellently reproduces their sound (and is a good deal cheeper than an actual set of pipes) with lots you can do to customize the sound. I can hardly put the iPad down. Thank you Mr. Eskin, I look forward to more of your apps.
  • Pretty Good, But ...

    By cosmo2001 (Pcmac user)

So, hats off to the developer for the sound, which is quite good, the straightforward layout, and the thoughtful feature of having a couple of timbres for the drones as options. However, as an the app piper, I find the stop button unintuitive for tight piping. Actuating the stop button to play the opening passage of, for instance, "Up and About in the Morning" or "Sean Bui" in a tight style is, to my fingers, very strange and difficult. Better would be a knee button that is held with a thumb that allows all notes save bottom D to sound when chanter holes are opened. Then, when bottom D is desired, the knee button would be released. This would be more analogous to how a real chanter is played. Perhaps this could be addressed in an update? If so, this app would rate higher in my book.
  • Great App

    By Agentf64 (Pcmac user)

I was a little disapointed by this latest update because I had gotten used to the previous implementation. That being said. The developer was great about addressing my concerns and I understand why he changed the interface. It is a great app. It's not a replacement for real pipes but it's the next best thing...and you don't have to be on a three year waiting list to get it. It sound's great and if you just want to practice fingering and learning tunes without strapping on the real thing I highly recommend it.
