RacquetTune - String Tension functions

- Tension measurement: quickly determines the tension and stringbed stiffness, detects changes in tension as small as 0.1 kg/0.2 lb, and provides an accuracy indicator to ensure consistent results. The app also offers graphical presentation of sound waves to help players find the ideal way of tapping the strings. Settings can be customized to serve tennis, squash, racquetball, and badminton racquets, respectively. Players can view the tension history for each racquet as a list or a graph and email a spreadsheet with test data.

- Swingweight calculator: allows players to add as many weights as they wish to the frame, move and change weights to visualize how swingweight, balance, and sweet spot location are affected, and enter target values for the racquet and let RacquetTune distribute the weights automatically.

- Stiffness calculator: enables players to simulate various racquet and string configurations, vary tension, string type, and racquet head size, and shows load-displacement curves, stiffness, and elastic energies. The app also handles the large deformations encountered in actual play.

- Demo video: players can view a demo video at racquettune.com to learn more about the app.

- Featured in tennis magazines: RacquetTune has been featured in tennis magazines in the USA, Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway.

- Test consistency: RacquetTune also allows players to check whether their stringer is consistent in their work.

- Note: the actual string tension in the racquet and the setting seen on a stringing machine are two different things and therefore incomparable - more information can be found at racquettune.com.

Pros:

- Accurate and consistent in measuring string tension

- Easy to use and helpful in monitoring when strings need to be replaced

- Useful tool for racquet stringers and racquet sports participants

- Developer is responsive and provides effective feedback

- History feature replaces the need for a paper stringing log book

Cons:

- Discrepancies in units when measuring tension in lbs. or kgs.

- Limited in measuring consistency or drop in measurement from when the racquet was first strung

- One user reported that it did not work and was just a toy.

  • Works great!

I first read about this over on the Tennis Warehouse forums. Several people mentioned they tried it and it seemed accurate. I decided to give it a whirl myself, and Yes, this app seems to be great! I've been stringing my own racquets for many years, so I have a good understanding of string tension. This app was within 3 lbs of what I strung my racquet at, which is appropriate given tension loss right after stringing. This app is easy to use and will be quite handy to monitor when strings start to go dead. Great app and I hope to see future versions. For the future, tracking/recording options of the data would be nice and perhaps add in specific racquet and string data. But again - WONDERFUL app.

Doesn’t work plain and simple. I knew better. Just a toy.
  • It is what it is.

I got it yesterday, and tried it on several racquets I had to string. It does a passable job. My problem with this type of thing is it measures tension, in lbs. or kgs. As such, there will always be discrepancies of a number of units. What you are looking for when you measure a string job is consistency, or the drop in measurement from when it was first strung. Such metrics are better stated in units that have no particular relationship to units of measurement. Since there are literally hundreds of strings on the market, it is possible, even probable that there is no linear information for the string you are using. Granted, you can get close with the information available, there will be variations, however slight, which will give a somewhat false reading. The best way to use this app is get a measurement, regardless of variables and use that number to determine consistency between racquets strung at the same time or between string jobs on the same frame. You can then check unit change over time and how much playing. One more thing; there will be differences of measurement between frames that are supposed to be exactly the same. This can be due to stiffness in the head, etc. so one can never be sure the measurements will be exactly the same, regardless of who strings the racquet. • racquetTune string tension app

    By J1mD@ndy (Pcmac user)

This is very useful and effective app for racquet stringers and racquet sports participants as well. It is a useful tool to determine, in relative terms, how much your racquet tension has changed over time, and when it's time for a new string job. It is rather accurate and consistent, especially when you consider all the variables and limitations of measuring string tension accurately. I also appreciate that the developer was very responsive with effective and personal feedback with an issue I was having (user error). Also, the "history" feature has replaced my old paper stringing log book. For professional stringers, this app could become an effective marketing tool.
