Software Features and Description

1. The main difference between the Functional Ear Trainer and other methods is that it teaches you to distinguish between tones in the context of a particular musical key.

2. One day I came across Alain Benbassat's program called "Functional Ear Trainer" and have been using it ever since.

3. It is based on Alain's method to learn to recognize tones.

4. You begin to recognize the role (or function) of each tone in this key, which is incredibly similar to its role in other keys of the same scale.

5. I was so excited about this ear trainer that I have developed a mobile app based on the Alain Benbassat method.

6. Most likely you have already tried different programs to learn to recognize intervals or even to acquire perfect pitch.

7. Imagine you could understand music... It is like when somebody is talking to you, you not only hear pleasant sounds, but you recognize words and their meaning.

8. A good musical ear helps when you are composing, improvising, transcribing melodies, or playing with others.

9. - what musical instrument you play (you don't even have to play one).

10. It is so important for a musician to know what you are hearing.

11. And it is *guaranteed* anyone can gradually develop this skill.

  • Outstanding

I feel this is a simple, very well done app that does what it says. It’s found a specific category of (often undertrained) skills and elegantly guides and instructs you on how to train them and why they’re important. What’s more, I think this certain category of skills is very often overlooked. It’s designed very well and logically with no frills and with some interesting metrics and data about how you’re doing. Finally it does not claim to be the one thing you’re missing and holding you back from becoming an amazing singer. That’s because it is not. As the creator says, it’s a tool that can help you develop and refine your ability to hear pitches relative to others and stay in key. They do not try extremely hard to sell it because they know what it is and that it is great! After going through some of the instructions, although I had never heard of or have met Korchan, I’d bet he (or whoever made and placed the instructions/lessons) is very smart and self aware. Again not because of a use of big words or vocabulary but just because of the usefulness, digestibility, and timeliness of the instructions. This app does everything well and, to me, nothing poorly. And it’s free! No ads.
  • This is what I’ve been needing!

    By PacWoman (Pcmac user)

My pitch is good, but when put in situations where I’d need to improvise I always found it difficult. I’d watch amazing musicians that were so good to the point they knew exactly where the music was heading even without sometimes knowing the song. Their instincts and understanding song structure of a tune was something I always wanted to be able to do. I always wanted the ability to be put in a situation where I could just jump in even without knowing the song. I was always jealous of my friends that could do that. Well, I can’t afford a Berkeley education but I can designate 5 minutes a day to training my ear and so far.... I’m already seeing a difference in my ability to recognize pitches within any key given. High five!
  • What a surprise!

    By Startle Me (Pcmac user)

I thought the technique that this app uses wasn’t really teaching me the sound of each interval. So when it gave me an interval, I would practice going up that step and down that step. I thought this is really the way to learn intervals. But I was wrong. The technique in the app really does work. I discovered this when I got to the third level where it gives you a note anywhere on the keyboard. I couldn’t believe it! I was nailing it! My method couldn’t have helped me do this exercise. I suggest you take your time with it. Don’t push it, and don’t rush it. Do a little bit every day, and you will get more and more confident. I hope you are as surprised as I was.
  • Very good

This is a challenging app for me. However, my wife is great. She has years as a piano voice teacher, so she will advance quicker. No problem. For me, my third nights lesson and I am hitting 70 to 90 points consistently. I was bummed my fist night. I hit 100% only once on night 2. Then hit 87 %. So I shall not advance till I stay above 90 consistently. So, I think I shall get way better as I go along, but it takes practice, and it’s rewarding to see your personal improvement. It helps my harmonica and guitar playing too I gave four stars instead of five because for the first time user it’s confusing to understand at first what tones you look for, so perhaps an example to show the first time user will keep more interested beginners I enjoy this app
