GhostReader is the best Text-To-Speech App

I am very happy that App continues to be updated. The ability to use Apple's voices is fantastic. Apple has the best accessibility features for disabled people of any computer company. And the Mac and IOS text to speech capability is second to none. Apple's voices are the highest quality of any available commercially. This is why even the blind can use an iPhone more easily than any smartphone. App is simply the best Text to Speech software available. I use it to turn my scanned books and eBooks to audio-books that I can listen to when driving and traveling. To do the conversions, I find it is best to extract the text and past the text into the App app window so you can customize the pronunciation when needed. It is the capability to customize the output where App stands above the competition. There is no comparison. App's audio output is the most human-like and listenable output available.

Just wrong

I’ve used App for almost ten years. The voices were great. Now I have to re-purchase the voices at a cost of $15 each. EACH! Apple’s voices are lousy (I’m NOT talking about Siri). Also the steps to activate a voice is really complicated.

I like it

I really like this pro version of their app. I had used a more simple voice reading program before but this one can really save you a lot of time. It can read in multiple voices, and it can let you globally fix pronunciation problems with thier prefernces. I only gripe is that I want to disable voices that I never use. But there may be a way to do this that I am just missing. I have disabled voices in my system preferences, but still see all the voices listed under my possible choices in the tool, so it make this part a little frustrating to use. I am still exploring features, so I may post an updated review later. But if your one the fence, this is a good purchase.

The product info in the Apple App Store says: “Reads text aloud from any app or program…” NOT TRUE! It doesn’t work with iBooks, or the Calibre Ebook reader. It also does not directly open ePub book files, like many free apps will do. You have to be able to select all the book’s text using something else. One that works is the “Read4Me” app in the Apple app store for only $4.99, which does most of what app does, and it comes with a LARGE selection of voices, AND directly opens EPUB books. So if all you need is a simple reader, you might consider app to be too expensive at $39.99, considering it’s limitations. On the PLUS SIDE, in the voice-selection window is a “Custom Pronunciations” button that lets you modify how words are spoken, by entering phonetically how you want it to sound. One very creative feature that app has is “Tagging”, which lets you select a different voice for each character in your book, AND language detection which assigns voices according to language. Very cutting edge technology with these features, and the voices (Ava and Samantha) are more humanlike than any in the Read4Me voice selection. Would get 5 stars if it only would directly open ePub docs, and work with iBooks.
