What is Marlee Keyboard?

The Marlee Keyboard is a free app designed to help users learn sign language by using a combination of visual and physical learning. It features a QWERTY keyboard populated with sign characters that users can tap to see the corresponding alphabet character on the screen. The app also includes cut and paste animations that allow users to send animated sign language via email, text, chat, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, or any application that supports a native keyboard.

Software Features and Description

1. The Marlee Keyboard uses a combination of Visual Learning and Kinesthetic (Physical) Learning to help users associate Sign Language characters with their corresponding alphabet character.

2. In addition to a sign keyboard the app includes cut and paste animations that allow you to send animated sign language via email, text, chat, Facebook, Twitter, What’sApp or in any application that supports a native keyboard.

3. It converts the image of the sign to the actual letter - so that users can learn the signs through using a familiar keyboard.

4. Marlee signs was created by MEDL Mobile and Academy Award Winning Actress, Marlee Matlin, who have come together to use mobile technology to increase awareness and education for sign language.

5. This keyboard DOES NOT create sign characters in the actual text field.

6. Be sure to also check out Marlee Signs with video sign language lessons - also on the App Store.

7. Marlee’s goal is to help as many people as possible learn sign language so that we can all better communicate with each other.

8. You see the familiar QWERTY keyboard populated with sign characters.

9. However, we are working on an update that will allow users to create messages using the actual characters.

10. To use the Marlee Keyboard, you’ll need to go through the installation process.

11. You tap the sign, and it shows up on the screen in the familiar alphabet.

As a deaf person, I was disappointed in this App. I will state why. First, I thought the keyboard in ASL will show up in iMessage, not to change to English text in iMessages. Second, the moving pictures did not work in iMessage. There was no way to copy paste it in the iMessage. Also, it wouldn't go in the iMessage when I click on it. Here are my suggestions: 1. Deaf people wants to use ASL abc in texts. I know hearing people doesn't want that feature but if I am texting a Deaf person I would like that option to be able to fingerspell in text. 2. The moving pictures was unable to be utilized. Perhaps, fix this bug,so I can give a review on this feature. 3. I would pay for extra features such as ASL characters etc.
  • A teaching keyboard for folks who don’t know sign language well.

    By saga33 (Pcmac user)

Hi all, I’m on the team that developed the this app. We are honored to work with the app to help fulfill her vision of teaching ASL. This keyboard was designed to help people like me - who can’t read sign language very well - to learn what the different letters look like. And for people who need to practice. The keyboard teaches by reinforcing the proper signs for each letter as you type. We will be adding more and more features and ways to use the keyboard moving forward. Enjoy the app for FREE while we keep making it better!
  • A slick piece of software!

    By Pranay Prasad (Pcmac user)

This app is awesome! A great way of learning ASL and is very user friendly. The quick start guide provides a detailed walkthrough to set up the keyboard. To all the people who are complaining that ASL signs do not show up in the text field, the description of the app tells that it is for learning ASL signs and not using the signs in text messages. So I don’t think its a bug. I’m guessing its a feature. Anyway, I love this app and see it as a great way to get me started on learning ASL. 5 stars for that!
  • Love this!

So I, like many others was having an issue getting the animations to work, but I figured it out. You will only be able to use the animations if you grant the keyboard full access. Full access can be kind of scary, but I haven't had any issues with other keyboards I use. It doesn't express that you have to grant full access in the instructions, but if you want to be able to copy and paste the GIFs that's what you will have to do.
