F5 Transcription PRO functions

- Variable speed and automatic rewind: slow down the playback to match your typing speed and speed it up when proofreading. The program automatically rewinds a little every time you pause.

- Waveform with pause measure: shows where you are and how loud it is. One click takes you to the desired position. The highlighted passage is played back in a loop and the length is measured.

- Memos for every transcript: write down all important or conspicuous information for each interview. The memos will be automatically imported into f4analyse and can also be read in MAXQDA/Atlas.ti.

- Automatic speaker change: automatically types the name of the person currently speaking in dialogues. With more than two speakers, text modules will come in handy.

- Automatic timestamps: timestamps are inserted automatically during typing. Clicking on a timestamp plays back the corresponding passage instantly.

- Text modules: create a set of frequently used text modules, like recurring phrases, transcription symbols, or speaker names. Text modules can easily be imported and exported between f4 and f5.

- USB foot pedals: use foot pedals to control playback and typing. Three different models are offered, and the foot pedals Infinity IN-USB-1 and IN-USB-2 by VEC are supported.

- Backups: regular backups are saved to prevent loss of work.

- Search & replace: make transcripts anonymous by searching for a speaker's name and replacing it with an abbreviation. Alternatively, use abbreviations in the transcript and replace them with the proper terms later.

  • Great for researchers

    By javacrossknit (Pcmac user)

I spend a lot of time transcribing interviews and taking notes on films for research, and this program makes the work much easier (like one of the other reviewers, I also use the Infinity USB foot pedal, though the program works fine without one). Little niceties like being able to click on a timestamp to scrub to a particular point in a file make reviewing materials painless. I now recommend the program to all of my advisees, particularly those who rely heavily on interviews in their doctoral research. I’m very happy I bought this.
  • AutoSave???

    By JennyRaeS (Pcmac user)

I really like the app and it’s helping me transcribe my interviews. One major problem though is with the autosave function. Every 10 minutes (when it’s supposed to save automatically) I get a warning that I don’t have permission to save in the folder. I’ve tried changing the folder to one just in my Documents, but that hasn’t worked either. I’ve checked permissions and apparently it looks good, but still, I have to stop to click the button every time that warning appears. It’s getting very annoying! Update: Now I’ve even turned autosave OFF and get the same warning. Gah! I like the time stamp and the ability to have autotext.
  • Good software, great support

    By Triola1323 (Pcmac user)

I opted for this software originally because I didn’t like the policies of some other transcription software companies — I’m one of those weirdos who try to suport good companies with decent practices before I support something just because it’s what everyone uses (yeah, because some big company is going to go under for not getting my $50 :) Anyway, I’ve been really pleased in general with the sofware, although I was looking forward to having parity with the Windows version on things like the waveform. The one thing that was super annoying and cost me extra time when working with this was the fixed format timestamps, since their format was not the format I have to use for work. Not a deal killer on something short, but with a 75 page transcript with multiple speakers — ouch. That was the one thing that kept me from recommending it to others as a professional product, because I know most people would see that as a deal killer. I emailed their tech support asking if there was any way around this to make those formatting changes quick while still maintaining the ability to sync by timestamp. I got a detailed response from the project head, who passed the email along to the main developer, who, in turn, corresponded several times. Among other things, they mentioned that they’d looked into providing alternate format options and were thinking about it for the next release. I can’t say how happy I was to see this update! It’s not as if I think they did this for me; it’s that I know others had asked about this and that the developers listened and thought about what users needed.
  • Great application for interview transcription!

    By Haseusa (Pcmac user)

the app really gets the job done. It is easy to use, affordable and the guys at audiotranscription.de are providing great customer service. I use the app together with their Infinity foot pedal and I can strongly recommend both products. As long as there is no reliable automated solution for audio transcription the app is your best bet.
