  • Not bad for what it is

    By ECatPlay (Pcmac user)

The AR is cool, although it’s not obvious how to bring it up. You go to Exercises then Practice and build a small molecule (a C with a -4 charge and 4 H’s with a +1 charge to make methane, for instance.). When you bring the elements together to make the molecule, that’s when the icon to activate the camera appears, and you can choose to use the AR card or other background. Then you can look at the molecule from different sides. (The AR card can be printed from the the app website.) So far as the chemistry, it’s very simplistic. Basically simple ion chemistry: you can’t use 2 C’s and 6 H’s to make ethane, for example. You can only choose from 2 oxidation states for Fe, although it actually has a rich coordination chemistry. And there is a problem with the bond angle for water and trying to build it from an O with a -2 charge and 2 H’s with a +1 charge. Hopefully fixes are in the way. But for getting the basic idea of atoms sharing electrons to make molecules, this is a neat way to do it.
  • Many mistakes

    By Berniemj (Pcmac user)

This app has many chemistry mistakes. Ionic compounds are named like covalent compounds. It said AlCl3 does not exist.
