What is Strobe tachometer (RPM meter)?

The Strobe Tachometer app is designed to measure the speed of any rotating object by detecting the flicker frequency of light. The app offers three different modes of measurement, including a flashlight mode, laser mode, and magnetic mode. The app allows users to quickly assign the flicker frequency with an accuracy of 0.0001 Hz (0.01 RPM) and displays the frequency in either Hz or RPM. The app also offers a simple calculation method to determine the speed of objects that exceed the upper limit of measurement.

Software Features and Description

1. It can also be used for measuring medium rotation speeds (up to 2,700 RPM), but at such speeds there is a risk of spontaneous tearing away of the magnet and strong vibration due to center-of-gravity shift.

2. IF THE SPEED IS MORE THAN UPPER LIMIT, YOU MAY STILL DETERMINE THE SPEED BY FIRST MAKING MEASUREMENTS WITH A LOWER FLICKER FREQUENCY AND THEN MAKING A SIMPLE CALCULATION (AS EXPLAINED IN THE APPENDIX).

3. Changing the frequency of the flicker of light may help detect the rotation speed.

4. When the flicker frequency of light coincides with the speed of any object, such as a fan, the rotating fan may appear to be stationary.

5. • Up to 100 Hz (6000 RPM) for the iPhone flashlight (iOS 7 and 8).

6. • Up to 40 Hz (2500 RPM) for the iPhone flashlight (iOS 9+).

7. • Up to 1000 Hz (60 000 RPM) for a connected flashlight (see the video on YouTube: ).

8. The magnetic tachometer is best suited for measuring low rotation speeds (from 6 revolutions per minute).

9. • Measurement range from 0.3 Hz (18 RPM) to 1000 Hz (60 000 RPM).

10. This tachometer operates by measuring the magnetic field from a spinning magnet.

11. After a long period of usage, in case of overheating, the iPhone flashlight turns off automatically.

As expected, this fails for a quarter second when the iphone cannot supply a high enough current over a long enough period of time(around 3 seconds) to the flashlight. Also, ads pop up on this. There are other, better apps for this.
  • Good app

  • Good... But not for the purpose it's intended

    By replehsnatas666 (Pcmac user)

It unfortunately does notwork well as a tachometer, however, i accidentally discovered that this thing can use the amber led at higher frequencies! So good enough for me

Have used it to measure rpm on a few things. Extremely useful handy. For someone who works on obsolete mechanical and electro mechanical equipment this is a dream app
