  • What a shame.

    By DarwinsPlatipus (Pcmac user)

I’ve been a MacGourmet user on Mac since 2008. Even though it has not been updated in years, it is the only desktop recipe app that is truly customizable affords me all the categories and classifications I need. Lists (grouping) of recipes, as are categories, keywords, servings, yields and cooking-prep-total times. Ported over to OSX this program is a borderline disaster. First and foremost there are no photos! This is unforgivable! Chef Mode: No way to customize the font or sizing so recipes that should fit on the screen are now on multiple pages. I have links on many imported recipes that other programs (paprika) allow me to select and the link comes up in a browser. It’s a little thing, but saves me quite a bit of time. Lastly the ability to link recipes together (called relationships), one of the great features of MacGourmet is missing. With the desktop app I can have multiple recipes linked to a master recipe. Very helpful. I’m very disappointed in this app. It could so very easily be the one of the best recipe apps available with a little effort.
  • Beautiful, functional, but missing a needed feature

    By TurtleJogger (Pcmac user)

I have used MacGourmet for years but have recently (6 months ago) replaced it with Paprika. MacGourmet is the app I want to love. It is beautiful, functional, customizable, except it lacks one important feature. I cannot check on my phone for what meal I have planned for tonight. I have a busy household. I don't want to go run to my Mac to see what I had planned for dinner tonight (and if the kids have eaten the ingredients). Now MacGourmet obviously won't tell me what the kids have eaten, but a simple menu screen on the iPhone would let me take it from there. From what I've heard, someone bought MacGourmet and is now just riding on the developer's coat-tails. No enhancements, just same-old app. I'm sorry to leave MacGourmet, but that one feature is a must. Too bad. MacGourmet's presentation is much better than Paprika, but Paprika imports recipes more easily and the no-menu planner on the iPhone app is a deal breaker. 😔 I'll keep an eye to see if I can come back. As I said, I WANT to love this app, but I need an accessible menu planner function.
  • The developers don’t update this app

    By Rachel575 (Pcmac user)

I am fed up with this app and the developers seem to have abandoned it. I have used it for about 4 years. I originally chose this one because I had MacGourmet on my Mac. It was okay for viewing recipes from my Mac and occasionally importing them. The sync works well. However, the developers haven’t updated this app in years and it is no longer working for me. The import feature on the iOs app works very poorly, even from sites that it recognizes. The importer won’t even open a URL if you copy and paste it with the “http://“ at the beginning. The app suddenly quits when you try to save the recipe or add a picture and then your progress is lost and you have to go through the whole process over again. There is no Safari extension to import directly from Safari. If I primarily used the Mac app, I’d probably just stick with this, but since I’ve mainly replaced my laptop with my iPad, I’ll probably try a different app. It’s unfortunate that Mariner just doesn’t seem to care about making this app better.
  • Looks & sounds better than it works

    By roamer 99 (Pcmac user)

I’d been hoping it would get the job done: I’ve a lot of recipes and I don’t want to print them out to work with them in the kitchen, or when I need a shopping list, etc; however, it’s not getting the attention it deserves. (This seems true of many of the software titles mariner publishes.) It frequently crashes on both my iPad and iPhone. Recipes sync, but shopping lists don’t (although you can watch a zippy little bar that supposedly shows it doing just that). I’d been hoping it would get the job done; however, it’s not getting the attention it deserves. (This seems true of many of the software titles mariner publishes.)
