  • Fun game, slightly awkward to play..

    By martimer (Pcmac user)

The interface occasionally interferes with quick and easy game play and there are a couple of minor bugs (the game occasionally locks up the yellow die without providing you any notice except that it cannot be used) but other than that it is a fun game. I found the board game easier to play (physically) since you can see all of your items and easily look up their effects without obscuring the game. The artwork is very nice but it needs to at least provide a save feature to get five stars and an improved interface would not hurt.
  • Great game just got better with Expansion Pack

    By egnewton (Pcmac user)

I have sunk hours into this game, and it never disappoints. Now with the update and Cthulhu Expansion Pack, the game has many more dimensions. I hope they come out with more expansion packs and cover different Ancient Ones, characters, locations, and storylines. I particularly like how playing against Cthulhu has two parts, each requiring different strategies and priorities. It has really helped me to maximize the abilities of the investigators and use them together--e.g., one investigator will "soften" an adventure by sacrificing stamina or sanity to clear out monsters and make it easier for a following investigator to complete. As you close the first phase of the story, you need to load each investigator with money, spells, and artifacts. If you enter the second phase empty-handed (especially if also low on sanity/stamina), doom is your certain friend. I hope there will eventually be a greater selection of Ancients--from easy (get a quick fix) to very hard. My only complaint is that I have to reload the expansion pack every time I wish to play against Cthulhu. I think this is an Apple thing, not the game. At least, I am willing to believe that so I can give this game a well-deserved 5 stars.
  • Love the game, hate the absurd difficulty.

    By hlb (Pcmac user)

It's a lovely game to look at, the sparsely but effectively deployed audio certainly delivers the desired atmosphere, and I find myself unable to put this down for hours on end. Unfortunately, I also find myself unable to win on the higher (and most interesting) difficulty levels! The game is basically a sort of slot machine that allows you to indirectly affect the outcome of each play before it is made. In principle, this is where the fun comes in, except that in spite of your best efforts, the random results will thwart you again and again. It wouldn't be so bad if it were possible, as other reviewers have requested, to save your progress in such a way that you could reload to a point before things went downhill for you. Unfortunately, this app only provides one save point, the most recent one. This ultimately means that you'll repeatedly find yourself facing unavoidable defeat after sinking an hour or more into a single game, without the option of starting over at a point when things were still looking up. Irritating!!! If we ever get a flexible save-game system, I won't hesitate to give this app five stars, as it has the potential to be hella fun. Until then, even three stars seems generous, as the fun inevitably turns to frustration.
  • Elder Sign: Omens

    By hundiemann (Pcmac user)

Initially playing the game, I cursed myself for buying it. I was wishing that the App Store had trial downloads, since I thought it was going to be an Adventure Game. It looked like it was going to be complicated and confusing, and not the type of game that I was looking for. Buying it outright, I at least tried it out. Once I started playing, it turned out to be awesome. One of the great things is that even if you don't win the game, just completing some of the adventures is terrific, making you want to get the hang of it. It isn't easy, but now I've finally won my first game. Thinking back on it, it didn't seem so difficult, probably because I've started to figure out how to play. Now I'm anxious to see what happens next? It's definitely worth the price.
