★ ★ ★ The Elements by Theodore Gray Overview

What is The Elements by Theodore Gray? The Elements is an app that introduces and educates users on the elements of the periodic table and how they combine to form the world around us. The app features a living periodic table where every element is shown with a smoothly rotating sample. Users can tap on an element to read about it and see a sample filling the screen, photographed to razor sharpness and rotating around a complete circle in front of their eyes. The app also includes fascinating stories about each element, surrounded by carefully photographed objects representing it. Users can pinch-zoom or tap any object to bring it up full screen, where they can split into a pair of stereo 3D images, allowing them to see all 500 objects pop off the screen in 3D, and they can spin the objects, in 3D, with the touch of a finger. The app is fully translated into over a dozen different languages.

  • Update?

    By Bass Bone (Pcmac user)

How about an update? There are at least some new element names...
  • Pretty, but that’s it.

    By p___s (Pcmac user)

Cons: -HUGE: 1.7GB for high resolution images that rotate that could be just as easily shown in 1-4 images each (instead of the app 40+ of each object). -COSTLY: $9 for information that is easily obtained anywhere, like Wikipedia (or WolframAlpha which it even links to). (For example, the app amazingly useful and slick “Sky Guide AR” app is only $3) -LACKING INFO: each element has a few interesting tid-bits crammed in the app main page (for example, you can’t expand the app emission spectrum graph), and then a short paragraph or two overview on the app next page. It just leaves you wanting more info that just isn’t there. Pros: -Well packaged, slick interface I got it to encourage my daughter to get interested in this app, but interest quickly fades after seeing “ooh, the app images spin”. I’d still give it only 3 stars if it were 100MB and $1. Save yourself memory/space on your device and money, skip this app that’s just bells and whistles, and just use Wikipedia or something else.
  • Amazing app!!! But it NEVER crashed on me.

    By SophieBoo1 (Pcmac user)

I usually get too bored playing normal apps. This the app best thing to use especially when I get bored. Also, when I don’t have the app book itself (yes I do have the app book this app is based on). I am not sure if (other ;3) kids would like this but...at least I do...
  • Amazing app

    By L.B. Beurmann (Pcmac user)

This app is engaging and beautifully done. Not just for chemistry students! We have the app book and I'm glad we got the app app too. Recommend it for all ages! Even my preschooler and elementary school kids are fascinated with and play with this app. We got the app parallel Elements Flashcard app and it is a game to them.
