  • Good but lacking

    By tsmashace (Pcmac user)

I really enjoy this app so far, especially the aozora bunker e-reader features. That alone has helped me tremendously in reading more Japanese texts. However, I would just like to clarify somethings that I feel weren't apparent to me at the time of purchase. The app has 3 features accessible from its main menu; a browser, an e-reader connected to aozora bunko, and study lists. The standalone browser can access websites and use its features like define and add to wordlist. But it doesn't integrate with safari as well as I would like it to. Maybe this is a difficulty created from Apple's end. In safari, you can only define a word and not add it to a wordlist. As a matter of fact, that's the only thing you can do outside of the app itself. Maybe this is only important to me, but I prefer to keep these vocabulary words to review later. I'm finding it a critical default, that I can't add to wordlist outside of the app. If I want to do that, I have to copy the URL from safari, paste it into this app's browser, highlight the word, and then add it to a wordlist. It would be great to have the add to wordlist functionality available everywhere, ie safari and mail. In any case, I look forward to this app and it's improvements.
  • Great app for fluid reading practice

I use this app for reading book files and websites online. I love my midori dictionary and this app can connect to it. At first I was upset about the app changing to a subscription model, but the developer explained why it must be this way. I sent a somewhat terse and unfriendly message, but the developer responded calmly and patiently. After I thought about it I realized it's better now. There have been so many updates lately, while so few before the subscription model started. I waited too long to write a review explaining how nice the app is.
  • Purchased a month ago, and now receiving updates are a Subscription??

    By ShaneJ017 (Pcmac user)

I literally purchased this app a month ago on May 12 since I had wanted to learn Japanese in my spare time. After trying it out, I wasn’t happy with how it worked and was waiting for updates to make it more usable. However, now I see they are switching to a “subscriber” model even when the app doesn’t work well yet and the developer has the nerves to tell us customers who actually paid for the app to either stay on the current version or subscribe?! How is this even allowed in the App Store? This is completely unethical and I’m extremely disappointed.

Edit: updated to reflect that the developer addressed the bugs I pointed out. The dictionary algorithm works well and is fast. The UX design of the app is not that great, hence 4 stars not 5.
