Top Pcmac Reviews

  • Great Source

    By InfoSeeker2 (Pcmac user)

This App is helpful to high school seniors who desire to conduct research, but do not have access to a computer or laptop off campus. However, it would get rated 5 stars if it offered the citations for MLS and APA.
  • App exists only to sell subscription

    By Dr.Bop (Pcmac user)

The the app subscription service, particularly the annual version at $100 a year, is an excellent value. You receive instant electronic access to thousands of scholarly books and journals -- any one of which may cost that or more. Yet the barely functional, buggy, and unstable the app App is hugely disappointing. It appears that the marketers behind the the app service wanted something to suffice for just 24 hours -- its free demo period -- only long enough before you needed to subscribe as a paying customer or forget the whole thing. The Web-based experience is slightly better, but antiquated as well. Help files discuss options for using either Internet Explorer or Netscape Browsers. 😳 When you access the service via a web browser (on a desktop or laptop or even your iPad), the iPad *app* has no awareness of what you did using the web, even though you use the same account credentials. The app is inexplicably crippled, dumbed down from functionality on its web counterpart, and kept ignorant of your web-based actions using the same account. It's truly a shame because the iPad experience -- clearly an afterthought for nothing but marketing purposes -- could have been a greatly useful tool to students and researchers. Buy the subscription for content. Muddle thru the clunky but serviceable web interface. It works ok even on an iPad (without Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers).
  • Fantastic Service, but second rate App

    By hamiltonpaul73 (Pcmac user)

This is truly a stellar service and value, but the app has basic problems that make it frustrating to use. For example, you can't erase a "search" once you have entered it. You have to log out of the application if you want to start a new search. This is really basic, folks! And you can't highlight texts using the iPhone or iPad - which would be a wonderful help. As another reviewer said, the web based interface is clunky, but basically functional. The library access, though, for the money just cannot be praised enough. If you are doing research, it's an invaluable tool. Just wish they had put more work into their user experience. And I really hope they improve the functionality of the iPhone and iPad apps - amazing research tools!
  • This app isn't bad.. its terrible

    By Felsonj (Pcmac user)

For some reason, turning pages is very sluggish. If you turn away from a book you are reading on the app, sometimes it's not there when you return. The app apparently keeps no record of what you were just reading, so you have to find the book again and then find your page. Yes, it does appear there are bookmarks and ways of saving books for later. But the default setting of the app should be to keep whatever book you happened to be reading in a "recently read" folder so you can readily access it later. Among the 30 odd apps I have downloaded for the iPad, this app is probably within the bottom 10% in terms of overall quality. The only reason I am using it is because the app provides access to a book that I can't find elsewhere online.
