★ ★ ★ Brain Tutor 3D Overview

What is Brain Tutor 3D? Brain Tutor HD is an app that allows users to explore the structure and function of the human brain through high-resolution rotatable 3D models and real-time slicing at millimeter resolution. The app is designed for students, cognitive neuroscientists, medical professionals, and anyone interested in learning about the brain.

Software Features and Description

1. For students, cognitive neuroscientists, medical professionals and everyone interested in the brain, the program provides information about the anatomy and function of the human brain with various atlases describing and visualizing lobes, gyri, sulci, Brodmann areas, subcortical structures, selected specialized functional areas and major fiber tracts.

2. Brain Tutor HD uses rendered head and brain models as well as fiber tracts that were created from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of a study volunteer.

3. * Learn from text information about the functions of selected lobes, gyri, sulci, subcortical structures, Brodmann areas, functional areas and fiber tracts.

4. * Tap on text icon (iPhone/iPod Touch) or info icons in brain areas/tracts table to view text information about selected brain structure.

5. * Switch to another atlas and a specific brain area or fiber tract using the navigation tables.

6. The MRI data allows to look "inside" the brain using real-time slicing at millimeter resolution.

7. Rainer Goebel, a leading expert in anatomical and functional brain imaging and award-winning developer of scientific software.

8. * Explore high-resolution 3D models of the head and brain in real-time.

9. * Learn where brain structures are located both within 3D brain models as well as in MRI slices.

10. * Slice the brain along three axes (sagittal, axial and coronal).

11. * Select the head model to switch to head slicing mode.

  • Excellent cortical anatomy

    By SynapticSage (Pcmac user)

Well obviously, this app leaves out a fair amount of gross neuroanatomy--but several other apps have it and the gross anatomy is honestly the easiest thing you encounter in neuro course; beyond that the difficulty and detail ramps up and your teachers (points to self) consipre to fail you (if you dont learn the material of course). I also notices the people givig this app 2-1 stars come off as dithering idiots when I read their reviews. Look a few down from this one: someone claims it deserves 1 star b/c it doesn't include the diencephalon! Woop de doo. It's an easy structure. Moreover he or she then fails epically via claiming the dienchephalon contains the cerebellum...LOL....wow, just wow. That's so assinine it makes my head spin--the cerebellum juts out from the the app's stalk at the level of the pons, i.e., the metencephalon. Had that showed up in my quiz stack, it would receive a fat red X. Yes it's bad BUT there are plenty of apps that will show you it. Because the incompleteness, I subtract 1 star. TL;DR Good MRI view and cortical anatomy. Not much else though.
  • Wow

I am impressed with how this has improved my overall understanding of neuroanatomy. Thanks! STOP giving this app bad reviews, u get what u pay for. Honestly are u gonna sit down for a couple hours a day studying with ur iPhone? I paid 40$ for netters' neuro note cards App, and while They are very detailed, I have trouble spending more than 10 minutes a day while I'm taking a crap to study them. For example, my 10 mins today were spent writing this review ;-) In all seriousness, to learn the the app this should be one of the last resources u use. Right now, I have an atlas, a textbook, a high yield neuroanatomy text, a couple hundred pages of lecture notes, online neurosullabus, online sylvius, netter's iPhone neuro app, and and a lab study guide. For a free app, this is a great tool to brush up on what u know, get used to MRI pics, and understand the the app in 3D. It would def. Pay for a detailed version that included the spinal cord, but for this free app there is nothing more I can ask for.
  • Marvelous! Now about that iPad version...

    By maizedog (Pcmac user)

It is difficult to capture in words just how much fun this app is to use. I work in a neuroimaging lab and after showing this off at a meeting I had to fight to get my phone back. I would love to see vascular structures and cranial nerves as others have noted (and that Cerebrii has) but for pure neurological joy, nothing beats this snappy, intuitive interface. Mad props to you Rainer Goebel. I hope you can find time to develop an iPad version.
  • Who knew learning could be so much fun

    By KazooKazaam (Pcmac user)

I have always been interested in anatomy but this has made learning about the the app so much easier and now i just love to play with it. This App is such a great learning tool. I think that they should make this type of things for all types of the body.
