Software Features and Description

1. By searching Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Github, and Gravatar — no login required! — Vignette will attempt to pair your contacts with their profile pictures on social media.

2. Vignette runs entirely on your phone; your contacts stay on your device and are never transmitted *anywhere*.

3. Vignette allows you to change all those ugly grey circles with initials into actual photographs.

4. Once you're all set, Vignette will write those updates to your contacts database on your phone.

5. Vignette is free to try, but in order to save the updates to your contact list, you will need to buy the one-time in-app purchase.

6. After amassing all these images, using Vignette's easy to use interface, you can select which avatar you'd like to use, or none at all.

7. That means in Messages, Phone, and all of your other apps, you see beautiful images instead of ugly initials.

  • Works great IF you have social media info already in your Contacts

By Frank White 123 (Pcmac user)

I mean it’s no Fast Text, but it works exactly as advertised. And that’s why it’s 4 stars instead of 5. I recognize that how the app operates (scanning contacts on device only) is a core part of its design and choice of its designer, but for me, this makes it only marginally useful. I never enter social media info for my contacts. So unless this info is in there as a vestige from a prior Facebook sync (when that was possible) or because someone gave me a vCard that included it, this app won’t help. Out of 800+ contacts, it identified 19 updates — but I’m certain there are 100s more. Adding in social media info manually is a nonstarter for me (at that point, I might as well update the photos myself). I’d love to see an option to log in to these services to match contacts and grab photos (like how the old Facebook sync worked). That said, the app is free to download and will show you exactly what it will do for you before you have to pay (which is a great idea, executed well) — so no harm in trying it out!
  • Really great idea, needs a little polish

    By marcintosh (Pcmac user)

I don’t need this app, but I heard about it on the developer’s podcast which I listen to all the time. Since I can’t support the podcast with a recurring payment at this time, I decided to support the developer/podcaster with a one time payment for this app. The app works great with a clean contacts database. I just wish it gave you some assistance in cleaning that database. It doesn’t list contacts that have no social media info. I have to manually check my database to see which contacts need updating. I’d rather this app offer to list contacts that in can’t parse and allow me to update them without leaving the app. Ideally, I’d like to give the app my social handles and let it dig around and offer choices. For example, if I have a John Smith in my contacts with no social info this app should be able to use my Twitter and Facebook logins to search my follows/friends for “John Smith” or “John” and offer all the possible avatars for me to choose from. Then add the correct social account to John Smith’s contact info when I choose a photo. Also, whenever I run it, it shows me the same 40-50 contacts that it updated last time. I wish it kept track of its own progress and only showed changes. Overall, it’s a great app with a great execution, it just needs a little more polish to make it more functional. I understand that may not happen, but I wanted to add my two cents.
  • So many new contact photos!

    By zcramos (Pcmac user)

It takes a little bit of work to add social profiles or emails for all of the people in your contacts list, but the payoff is awesome! Having done this painstakingly by hand in the past for just a subset of my contacts, $4.99 for this app was well worth worth the time I would’ve otherwise spent trying to do this myself. Great work, Casey! Would love to see the following in future updates: - connect to the Facebook API, so I can select other photos of my contacts from Facebook to save myself from the temporary filters everyone seems to use - LinkedIn integration, for all my work-only contacts. I’m guessing you could connect to LinkedIn and grab profile photos from there for contacts that I’ve configured a LinkedIn account on?
  • Simple and useful; great 1.0

By Not Fake Steve (Pcmac user)

Nice debut by Casey. I’m glad I’m an ATP listener so I learned about this app. This is a great 1.0 effort I’m happy to support. Nice clean design, easy to understand and use, good pricing scheme as you only pay after you know if the app is useful to you. Great privacy treatment. The app is only as good as your contact database, of course. I found it less useful for work contacts than for personal ones, since a lot of the app’s data sources (Gravatar, Facebook) seem to be understandably more indexed for personal info than for work info. Feature/bug request/report: Do better with background processing or resume-after-sleep for long contact lists. It took me a few tries to get it to work, since the app seems unhappy if the phone goes to sleep or you do something else in the middle of a contact search. Easy workaround to simply stare-until-done, but a likely frustration for good prospective customers who aren’t already ATP fans. ;) This is a legitimately useful app that I enjoyed. It’s also a very solid debut 1.0 from a new indie developer, which made me very happy to support the efforts. Well done Casey. Hope you don’t get brutally sherlocked by iOS 13.
