How do you add a song to your ringtone

I am having a lot of trouble adding a song to my ringtone its way to hard. I can't figure it out I've downloaded a song that I want and now it won't let me put it as my ringtone. So plz tell me how this is supposed to work because clearly it's not possible for this app.
