What is Primitive?

Primitive is a photo editing app that transforms your photos into vector-based images using simple shapes like triangles, rectangles, ellipses, or bezier curves. The app has an intuitive settings panel that provides creative control to the user. The program looks for the best shape that can be drawn to maximize the similarity between the target image and the drawn image. It repeats this process, adding one shape at a time, and creates a unique artistic effect. The output can be saved as SVG and supports PNG, JPEG, and SVG output.

Software Features and Description

1. - IMAGE: Choose the input image that you want the program to draw using primitive shapes.

2. - RUN UNTIL SCORE: Choose this mode to stop running once the drawn image has a certain amount of similarity to the original input image.

3. - SHAPE TYPE: Choose the type of shape that the program should use to draw your image.

4. The program looks for the best shape that can be drawn to maximize the similarity between the target image and the drawn image.

5. - RUN UNTIL SHAPES: Choose this mode to stop running after a certain number of shapes have been generated.

6. - RUN IN DRAWING MODE: Choose this mode to paint shapes using the mouse cursor.

7. Give Primitive a picture and watch as it recreates it using simple shapes like triangles, rectangles, ellipses, or bezier curves.

8. - REVERT TO DEFAULTS: Reset all of the options except for image and shape type back to their original settings.

9. Using this process, the program can recreate a photo with surprisingly few shapes, and it creates a very unique artistic effect.

10. - SHAPE ALPHA: Constrain the program to use a particular alpha value for each shape, or uncheck the box to let the program optimize the alpha value for each shape individually.

11. Combo mode allows the program to pick the best shape at each iteration.

Primitive functions

- Transform photos into vector-based images using simple shapes

Great app

This kind of app is probably useful to different people for different reasons. For me, I wanted a way to make several different photos taken under very different conditions look similar in style. This accomplishes that beatifully. The actual interface itself could use a little polish, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this app works and works well. Thanks!
Sophisticated Results

Am using the app to transform digital paintings done with Sketchbook Pro into more abstract pieces. The results are sophisticated and actually helpful in showing where you need to strengthen values, etc in your original painting. Also had a question, emailed the developer and he answered the next morning. This sets the standard for high-quality apps.
Great app with minor drawing mode quibbles

It's a lot of fun and the results look great, but I had issues in drawing mode. 1) If your mouse accidentally leaves the picture area while you're dragging, the whole picture clears and I haven't found a way to restore it, and 2) I expect that holding down the mouse in the same area for a long time would eventually cause that area to look like the original image, but there seems to be a cap on how detailed it gets.

This application absolutly delivers! I’ll admit that the scope of it’s function is fairly limited… but it does what it does really well. Making GIF’s out of the sligtly varied results is probably my favorite use case. Pro: Easy to use and configure, excellent results Con: Time spent playing with the app instead of getting work done...
