★ ★ ★ PLIST Editor Overview

What is PLIST Editor?

PLIST Editor is a user-friendly editor for property list (.plist) data. It allows you to create, modify, visualize, and save your .plist documents in a clean and uncluttered interface. It is a lightweight Xcode alternative that uses less disk space, less memory, and starts up much faster. It is also "source control" friendly, maintaining the order of dictionary elements for XML and OpenStep/ASCII plists.

Software Features and Description

1. For XML plists (the most commonly used) and OpenStep/ASCII plists, it maintains the order of dictionary elements and the editing capabilities are on parity with Xcode, so you don't see a difference between a file edited in PLIST Editor and one edited in Xcode.

2. PLIST Editor is probably the only "source control" friendly property list editor that you can find on the market (except Xcode, of course).

3. • "Source control" friendly - for XML and OpenStep/ASCII property lists the order of dictionary elements is preserved, showing them in the same order as they are defined in the file.

4. PLIST Editor is an easy to use editor for property list (.plist) data.

5. PLIST Editor can be used as a lightweight Xcode alternative, having more features, using less disk space, less memory and starting up much faster.

6. • Import plist data contained in .mobileconfig or .mobileprovision files or other files which are encoded using Cryptographic Message Syntax (CMS).

7. Similarly, when the property list is written to disk, the order of items from a dictionary written to disk is the same as the one seen on screen.

8. • Find & Replace text in the property list elements.

9. • Open and save property list files in XML, Binary and OpenStep/ASCII format.

10. For the files encoded using CMS there is support to see information about the signers (email address and certificate) and the additional certificates which might be included in the message.

11. • Edit the elements of a property list.

  • Like it, but wish it had more defaults

    By mrjimmyp2 (Pcmac user)

This is a really slick editor for existing the app files, but I was hoping it would offer more default values when creating new ones. For example, instead of having me type a key, I wish it would give me the option to select from a list of valid the app keys.
  • So far so good!

    By Danny Hanes (Pcmac user)

Honestly, I was going to go with a different app, but seeing how quickly the developer responded to comments gave me hope. If I run into any issues I will post my feedback. Thanks!
  • The right tool

    By Ovidiu Carstea (Pcmac user)

  • Errors loading XML

    By AeroD (Pcmac user)

I’ve been trying to load some standard XML files and/or schema files and recieve a general error that it’s not in the correct format. There is no help built in to the application either
