  • Wasted $30. Not for photographers.

    By A.J.Rocks (Pcmac user)

I was looking for an app for my Macbook that would correct one common problem for travel photographers: overcast/white skies. I have a great app with sky filters on my iPhone that is easy to use and provides pleasing results. I hoped the app would be an effective tool for my Mac for fixing the same kinds of issues. I wasted $30. the app will work relatively fine if you have a wide, scenic view with a perfect horizon line. Anything other than that is hopeless. For one, the vertical scale does not stretch far enough down to enhance a photo that has lots of sky in it (say, more than half the photo composition). The mask layers are clunky and difficult to use. The sky layer, by default, goes on top of your photo, which means you have to use an erase tool to remove the sky effect from where you don't want it. There's no ability to magnify the photo you're working on, making it extremely difficult to erase cleanly. the app has not really thought this through. It seems to be more of graphics tool for creating a striking (but totally fake) picture. No photography skills needed.

Top notch people at BrainFever. Instant answers to all my questions. Open to further development features. I have all 5 of their Apps and am creating a series of Graphic Novels with their help. Easy GUIs with intuitive controls so that knowing how to use one of them gives you instant access to all of them. Together they are a digital artist’s dream suite. My only reservation is on account of my own stupidity. I plopped down 29 bucks for each of them before I found his offer to buy them all at once for far less. Take a lesson.
  • big fan of BrainFeverMedia, but...

    By LionSong (Pcmac user)

I love BrainFeverMedia’s mobile device products, and am also a huge fan and constant user of LensFlare Studio on my Mac desktop. However, this product is obviously still in development is more of a “beta version” - which makes it not worth the $29.99 I just spent. This version did not meet my expectations and is at best a work in progress with need for further development. I’ve interacted with the developer and he’s a great guy.. i’m sure I’ll be changing my rating in the near future as he addresses some of the issues. If you are new to BrainFever Media - do not let this critique deter you from their fantastic products. As one of the first to purchase, try, and review SkyLabs Studio, everything I’m posting is in good faith that this product will be as awesome as their other releases. Unfortunately, this release seems just a bit premature - but I think of my investment as a means for BFM to keep doing what they do! Some observations / details: Primarily, many of the editing controls (and even the tutorial) is unconverted GUI and content from the LensFlare Studio and has not actually been implemented for use in this initial version of the app. For example, the Tutorial: is for LensFlare Studio rather than for this app. Sky Presets tab: A big disappointment is the low resolution quality of the skies that, when added to a higher resolution image, are grainy and cannot blend. There are no blur or opactiy controls for the sky presets. Also, unlike LensFlare Studio, skies do not show up as layers that can be controlled indepentently if desiring to add more than one sky to a scene. There is no undo after moving a control fader, no reset to set sky to original size or center detent to move one control fader back to default. Sky Mask tab; works as expected Elements tab: the choices are a bit meager. Another BrainFeverMedia product feature hot air balloons, which are missing from this - but wouldn’t that be found in the sky rather than a tree? Edit tab: Works on Elements only. As stated earlier, as a port from his brilliant LensFlare Studio, you may notice that mouse overs on certain controls show pop-ups referring to “lens flares” in the Edit tab affecting Elements added. Filters tab: works as expected (shouldn’t the mouseover pop up say “Select Lens Filter” rather than “Select Lens Texture”?) Textures tab: works as expected
