  • Let down by irrepairably bad transcription

    By Wade Tregaskis (Pcmac user)

The app itself is quite nice, and works pretty well. Though I didn’t really explore the editing & correcting tools, because the transcription on the 15m test file I tried was astoundingly bad. e.g. it identified eleven speakers when there were three. It completely missed some of the opening dialogue. I couldn’t even follow where in the transcript I was w.r.t. listening to the audio file separately, it was so utterly unrelated to what was actually said. Granted the audio file I tested with wasn’t fantastic quality, but that was rather the point - I don’t always have the luxury of a good mic setup or recording environment. And I could have been far more brutal - it was merely a cheap omnidirectional mic placed on the table in front of the speakers, in a quiet room. I’d hate to think how this tool would handle a recording that actually has background noise. In fairness I’m yet to find any automated transcription tool or service that’s good enough to be worth using. This one seems a bit worse than others I’ve tried, though, such as Dragon Dictate.
  • BEST there is and...

    By Fullabuster (Pcmac user)

We've been producing documentary TV for years. Way back in the day long interviews were transcribed by hand. Later on they moved to computer or were sent out to a service. Now we use this app. Is it perfect? No. It misses words and sometimes misassigns speakers. But it is the overall best of all solutions. Hence the 5 stars. It's incredibly fast. Relatively inexpensive. It is accurate enough to make paper edits or export favorites to use in a cut. It's amazing for tracking back to the original material for the "we need a sound bite and we can't recall who said what" moments. Especially when deadlines loom. We find we can easily screen material and make edit plans in the app itself, freeing up the edit machines/software. Nice productivity benefit there. We are using it from the instant our footage is uploaded to after a project has been delivered. Yes, the app/service needs improvement. We beg for it. The more accurate it becomes the more uses we find for it. We love that the developer is adding features and squashing bugs. We are also happy that the business model has a revenue stream so it can grow and improve. We hope the future brings an even more powerful app at even lower prices. We are fans.
  • Lives up to its name!

    By GottaRunWill (Pcmac user)

This amazing piece of software this app just got better with v2.0 I used version 1.0 on a clean 60-minute audio file of primarily one speaker with others not-mic'ed asking muffled questions from time to time. I was only interested in the mic'ed speaker this app lived up to its name! It did have a problem with some words: it interpreted 'sensual' as 'essential' and it gave phonetic spellings to unusual names, otherwise we were thrilled with the results saving us hours of work and our budget dollars. In version 2.0, it gives you better tools to correct name spellings. I can’t wait to try out its new language support limited to five languages at this point in time.
  • Remarkable

    By DavidMBrown (Pcmac user)

I do not give five stars to many applications. I have been using transcriptions of video interviews, both human and machine, for quite a while. The accuracy of this app is remarkable. The transcript editor is well thought out and implemented. But it’s primary usefullness to me is not correction of the transcript. It is listening to the transcript while reading/correcting. This process serves as the first review of the interview material, as well as the first step organizing, though the placement of periods and paragraphs. You’ll find out how useful this becomes after you’ve exported a transcript back to Final Cut Pro X, because those organizing decisions of periods and paragraphs turn into keywords and marked sections of the video file.
