A "so-so" game. Great potential, but needs so much more
By Happy in Illinois! (Pcmac user)
I have a third grader who really needs practice with multiplication. Tho't this looked perfect: fun, bright colors, intriguing, easy to read!
I downloaded it and went into it to give it a try. I like the formatting (the way it's set up)! But right off, I noticed several VERY important features which are included in every app I've ever downloaded but are missing in this one!
* The "menu" isn't a menu at all! All that pops up is, "Game Center Unavailable. Player not signed in." I looked and looked and could find NO way to sign in.
* The practice starts off with addition. No choices are offered! You MUST start with addition and proceed forward from there. A well-built menu would offer a choice of which action the user wants to start with. Third graders know how to add and subtract (or should), so why doesn't this app allow him to skip the add/subtract levels and begin with multiplication?
* The user should have the ability/option to redo a failed problem over and over until they reach the correct answer. Perhaps your app could offer (NOT GIVE) the user a small number of hints, one at a time (and not all at once). This would greatly improve the child's confidence and determination when faced with problems in real life!
* Perhaps your app could OFFER the user a brief, easy-to-follow, step-by-step visual instruction (which can be paused and/or replayed an unlimited number of times) on how to solve the current problem after, say, ten minutes or so. And, YES, it can take children quite a VERY long time when they are trying to learn how to do something new and difficult!
* The user should also be able to
- stop and save what they are working on,
- choose an approximate grade level of difficulty,
- back out if it's too simple or too hard,
- choose a completely different grade level/action or to exit altogether,
- return to their saved work and advance from there, and/or
- delete or replace their saved problem.
* The app should allow multiple users and allow each of those to save their work. My 3rd grader's brother is in 2nd grade. I know he would enjoy this app as well--if he could, that is, and it would help him immensely!
* There is no HELP.
* There are no instructions. Even the app description is short and says little.
* Create a timed "GAME" version for a single or multiple users! Allow the user to determined the amount of time; i.e., in five minute increments up to maybe 30 minutes.
* Create a practice version with NO timer! The app time allowed for each problem now is W-A-Y, FAR TOO SHORT for children! I feel that children trying to learn and practice the basics of the app should not be timed at all!
I tried a few problems and had to hurry to beat the timer. Imagine what would happen to a child's delicate ego when this game (as it is) is placed in their hands, and they fail time after time after time - all because they can't beat the stupid timer!?!
Isn't this app supposed to give children who have trouble with mathematical actions (add, subtract, multiply and divide) the opportunity to practice over and over so they can become proficient in the app?
* It would be even better if the user were able to pause everything if he's having trouble getting the correct answer. Many of us need extra time to learn how to reach a correct answer. It takes LOTS of practice, lots of patience, lots of paper and pencils and, sometimes, lots of help from someone else! As a child, I remember needing a lot of extra time, since the app was not easy for me!
This app has tremendous potential!! I REALLY DO LIKE IT! I just hope the developer will take the time to revise the flaws and will allow children to test it out before releasing the next update. It could be an EXTREMELY Useful and a VERY Popular app with parents, teachers AND the children who need to use it to improve their the app skills!
