1. The petroleum industry, also known as the oil industry or the oil patch, includes the global processes of exploration, extraction, refining, transporting (often by oil tankers and pipelines), and marketing of petroleum products.

7. A point to check is whether the volume of oil is measured before or after the gas comes out of solution, since the oil volume will shrink when the gas comes out.
8. The industry is usually divided into three major components: upstream, midstream and downstream.
9. Reported GORs may be calculated from export volumes which may not be at standard conditions.
10. When oil is brought to surface conditions it is usual for some natural gas to come out of solution.
11. Midstream operations are often included in the downstream category.
