Software Features and Description

1. When you reach the end of a line, if you don't manually go to the next line, the typewriter will go to the next line for you, even in the middle of a word! Press your finger on the page and a white-out brush appears.

2. Typing Writer shows that we don’t have to sacrifice the benefits and enjoyment of old systems every time we improve them.

3. Typing Writer works just like your old typewriter.

4. If you’re like us you’ll realize you like leaving them on, just to hear the bell letting you know you’re coming to the end of a line.

5. After you’ve typed your draft it’s easy to export and open in any word-processing software.

6. We felt we were more productive on a typewriter because we had to keep moving forward.

7. Typewriter sounds are included, but you can turn them off if you prefer.

8. Why don’t we just make a typewriter for the iPad, we decided.

9. At The Rumpus we were missing the typewriter.

10. Sometimes that means we get bogged down when the key to finishing a piece of writing is so often to just keep going.

11. Brush over a letter or a word.

    Horrible app can't backspace
  • A good replacement for messy ribbons

    By djimbee5 (Pcmac user)

This is a quality replacement for an old smith-corona sky writer typewriter, that doesn't require soaking used ribbons in India ink to get some more life out of them, and allows you the experience of hearing the bells at the end of a line or the strike of the keys. It's simple to use and does exactly what an old typewriter did. And while i wouldn't change the fact that the delete key doesn't delete, but acts as the backspace key does on an old typewriter, some people may have a hard time with that. You can type over letters just as you would have done, or you can backspace and use some white-out and retype over without inhaling noxious vapors or getting splotches. So for all you anachronistic folks out there that wax nostalgic for the typewriter experience without all those "issues", this may be the app for you. I recommend it. By the way, there is no spellcheck in this version and i don't know if there's going to be an update to change that, but i hope not. The way the app allows you to just continue the app, without all those other distractions is very helpful to people accustomed to working on the old technology. But i wanted to mention it for those that rely on that current technology. Thank you to the developers of this app!
  • Fun... and useful!

    By Amytown (Pcmac user)

This app is incredibly fun. I'm a writer, and I love to change my writing medium to change my mood and tone and experiment with my approaches to writing. So I handwrite and keyboard type, and yes, I own a 1966 blue Royal manual non-electric "portable" typewriter which I pull out when I really want to change the mood. But that "portable" typewriter" is about 20 pounds and I rarely have it with me. This app is a new and different way of writing, somewhere between the iPad writing I'm used to and going down to my basement to pull out the real deal steel beast. It's fun, but I'm also writing real drafts on it. I like that it, just like the real deal, makes me slow down my the app, focus on each word, take greater care with marks I know I can't just delete -- the marks will be there forever, even with white out applied, or over-typed. If you're a writer and want to experiment with a new way of thinking while you write, this is a must have. For everyone else, it's just darn fun. :)
  • Big on charm, short on usefulness

    By richardgrant (Pcmac user)

I feel ambivalent about this app, which fondly recreates the experience of using a traditional typewriter, but does so in a way that, I fear, will render the app practically useless to writers — even those, like me, who began our careers pecking out letters on a manual Remington or the like. For all the charm and nostalgia this app evokes, how many of us REALLY want to be thrown back to the era when we were obliged to resort to over-the app, crossing-out or brushing White-Out over our the app mistakes? Do we absolutely need to foreswear a feature that changes "dont" to "don't" for us automatically? If the developers could see their way to allowing us to toggle on or off some of the capabilities we've come to rely on (and enjoy) in the digital era, so that we could choose for ourselves what kind of balance to strike between tradition and convenience, this might turn out to be a fun and useful app for at least a few of us.
